USC Lures Munday from the Mount

from staff reports

Team USA star Lindsey Munday has taken the head coaching job at upstart USC after just four months at Mount St. Mary's. The Trojans start varsity play in 2012-13.

After proclaiming it was "all in" for women's lacrosse, the University of Southern California wasted little time to prove that point, announcing Monday that it has hired U.S. national team star Lindsey Munday as its inaugural head coach. The Trojans will begin varsity play in 2012-13.

Munday, a former assistant coach at her alma mater Northwestern University, spent the last four months as head coach at Mount St. Mary's, a program that had hoped to rebuild with her at the helm. The Mountaineers open the 2011 season Feb. 11 at Navy.

Munday won five NCAA championships as a player and assistant coach at Northwestern. She was the leading scorer for gold medalist Team USA at the 2009 FIL World Cup and is currently a member of the 2010-11 U.S. women's senior national team that will play Maryland and Virginia at Champion Challenge on Jan. 30.

"It was imperative that we hire a coach with the energy, experience and plan to build a premier women's lacrosse program," USC athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement. "Lindsey Munday embodies all that we are looking for as we take on this exciting endeavor. Her background both as an elite player and an elite coach who has been part of five national championships is a perfect match for a program that we hope will soon play at a championship level."

USC associate athletic director Mark Jackson began canvassing coaches in November. He told Lacrosse Magazine in November he envisioned the Trojans establishing a "hub" of lacrosse in the West.

"Her confidence and energy were apparent and she is no doubt ready to aggressively recruit from coast to coast and develop premier student-athletes that will perform well on the field and in the classroom," Jackson said in a statement Monday. "Her vision to build an all-encompassing program will fit in well with our many other championship-caliber programs."

Said Munday: "USC is a truly unique university with premier academics and championship athletics. The university's storied history, coupled with the support from its administration top to bottom, will provide the USC women's lacrosse program with the resources to be nationally competitive."
