Bucknell Nets Record 24 Goals in Win Over Howard

from press release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) scored a career-high six of Bucknell’s school-record 24 goals on Saturday in a 24-5 rout of Howard. Braun added an assist for a seven-point afternoon, and freshman Molly Ford (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul’s) also had seven points on two goals and five assists as the Bison picked up their first win of 2011 in emphatic fashion.

Eight different players scored goals for Bucknell (1-1) and six had multi-goal games. Freshman Ali Carey (Clarksville, Md./Garrison Forest), who had five goals in her collegiate debut last weekend against St. Bonaventure, tallied four more on Saturday and also handed out an assist. Sophomore Madison Hurwitz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) also tallied four goals, while freshmen Katelyn Miller (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and Lindsey Ferro (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) both added three goals and two assists.

Two more first-year players, Sophie Kleinert (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy) and Amanda Ayers (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) registered goals as well, while Andrea Feldman (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) had an assist.

Bucknell outshot Howard (0-2) 45-9 and did not allow a second-half shot until the final minute of the game.

Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) finished with a pair of saves in light duty, as Bucknell won the draw control battle 20-11. Miller led the way with six draw controls, while Braun had five and Kleinert and Kerri Althouse (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) three apiece. Braun and Ford picked up five ground balls apiece, while Kleinert had three.

Howard received goals from five different players. Bucknell limited Desiree Cox, the nation’s No. 2 goal scorer a year ago, to one goal on one shot attempt.

Bucknell jumped out to a 4-0 lead and had a 10-4 advantage at halftime, then scored 14 straight goals in the second half to make it a runaway.

The previous school record for goals in a game was 23, set against Saint Francis (Pa.) in 2007 and against Denver in 2004. Bucknell also broke the school record for margin of victory. Saturday’s 19-goal win was one better that the previous mark of 18, set in the Saint Francis game in 2007 and also against Mount St. Mary’s in 1988.

Bucknell will be back in action next Sunday, Feb. 27 at home against Robert Morris at noon.
