Navy Hammers Bucknell in Patriot Opener

from press release

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Aimee Gennaro and sophomore Jasmine DePompeo combined for 13 goals as Navy (7-1, 1-0 PL) posted a 17-7 win over Bucknell (1-6, 0-1 PL) in both team's Patriot League openers on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field. Navy won its Patriot League opener for the fourth straight season and successfully began its defense of its league title.

"I'm really proud of our team winning our first Patriot League game of the season on the road today," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "Bucknell played us tough today and we ran into a good goalie that made 19 saves. Aimee and Jasmine stepped up today offensively for us and were great finishers. They were able to get plenty of good scoring opportunities as a result of the hard work of midfielders Katrina Nietsch, Beth Young, Kathy Young and Jill Coughlin."

Gennaro, who is leading the country with 32 goals, scored a season-high of seven goals and added one assist. Gennaro was one goal shy of the Navy school record and scored on all seven shots she took in the game. DePompeo connected for a career-high six goals with one assist. The duo each now have 40 points on the year.

DePompeo scored just 50 seconds into the game and Gennaro scored on a feed from senior Caitlin Mandrin Hill just three minutes later. DePompeo then scored her second of the game, also off an assist from Mandrin Hill.

Junior Danielle Vivonetto then scored to put Navy up, 4-0. Vivonetto, an All-Patriot League Second Team selection in 2010, is seeing her first action after missing the first seven games of the season while recovering from an injury.

After a Bucknell score, Gennaro and sophomore Kathy Young scored back-to-back goals to extend Navy's lead to 6-1. Gennaro also added two more goals in the final 1:46 of the half as the Mids took an 8-2 lead into the break.

Gennaro then opened the second half with her fifth goal of the game 2:03 into the stanza. The Bison then scored just 12 seconds later before back-to-back goals by DePompeo and Gennaro pushed the lead to 11-3. Bucknell then scored twice to cut the lead to 11-5, but did not get any closer for the duration of the game.

Navy then scored six of the games next seven goals, with DePompeo netting three during the span and freshman Jill Coughlin scoring two.

Junior goalie Elaina Ponchione (Silver Spring, Md.) got the win in the cage for the Mids, making four saves in the first 35:00 of the game, before giving way to Navy's backups.

Bucknell's Alyssa Lorenz made 19 saves in the game and saw plenty of shots. Navy took a season-high 46 shots with 36 being on goal.

Navy was a perfect 13-of-13 on clears and controlled the draws, 18-8. Navy held a 14-11 edge in ground balls.

Mandrin Hill had a career-high 10 draw controls and gave out a season-best five assists. The 10 draw controls was one shy of the school record and her five assists moved her to fifth place on the Patriot League career list (81).

Bucknell was led by Madison Hurwitz's four goals.

Navy will head to California for a pair of games next week during the Naval Academy's spring break. Navy will play at Fresno State on Tuesday and at California Thursday.
