Boissonneault Leads Detroit Mercy to First Win Over Niagara

– Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON, Donald A. Wilson Secondary) led the Titans to their first victory of the season by scoring a game-high six goals against the Purple Eagles. Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN, Totino-Grace) and Lindsey Saunders (Pasadena, MD, Northeast) also sparked the Detroit offense as each player recorded a hat trick.

The Titans (1-4) used a total team effort to earn their first win of the year. Every player on the roster got into the action on Friday afternoon and the result was a 13-10 victory for Detroit.

Boissonneault scored two goals in the first half, and poured in four more to finish off Niagara. The junior scored three in a row midway through the second half to give UDM a 13-9 lead. She now has a team-high 16 goals on the year.

Eidem scored the first goal of the game for Detroit, and then added two in the second half to record her hat trick. Her goal with 19:21 on the game clock tied the game at 9-9, and Detroit would go on to take the lead with a goal from Saunders two minutes later. Eidem picked up the assist on the go ahead goal.

Olivia Mendoza (Lansing, MI, Catholic Central) rounded out the scoring for Detroit. The senior scored her first goal of the season and also registered an assist against the Purple Eagles.

Nicole Karek was the bright spot for Niagara. She led the team with three goals. Fran Pollastro also impacted the game with a two goal performance.

Detroit was down 7-5 at the half, but they came back with a strong effort in the second outscoring their opponent 8-3. This was a very physical game that featured seven yellow cards going against Niagara. The Purple Eagles committed 45 fouls in the game, including 28 in the second half. Detroit was only whistled for 24 fouls.

Marybeth Flanagan (Lansing, MI, Waverly) had a strong showing for the Titans. The sophomore made nine saves in each half to end the day with 18 total.

The Titans will hit the road for conference play next week. They will face Liberty on March 25, and follow that game with a contest against Longwood on March 27.
