Welsh's Career-High Leads Rutgers to Win

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Rutgers senior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.) scored a career-high five goals to help lead the Scarlet Knights (7-4) in a rout of Monmouth (8-4) 19-9 on Tuesday afternoon at Kessler Field. Senior attacker Katherine Marino (Hillsborough, N.J.) and junior attacker Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) added four goals each in the win.

The Scarlet Knights got out to a commanding lead, scoring the first five goals of the contest. Rutgers received a pair of tallies from Marino, and one goal each from Welsh, Watts and senior attacker Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.).

Monmouth went without its first goal until eight minutes into the game, making it 5-1 in RU’s favor, however, the Scarlet Knights resumed their scoring surge, going on a four-goal run to pull ahead 9-1. Welsh added two more goals, while junior midfielder Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) each chipped in a score.

The Hawks found their second goal at the 7:09 mark of the first half to make it 9-2. Rutgers closed out the opening period with three goals as Anderson found the back of the cage twice and Marino posted her third score to give the Scarlet Knights a 12-2 halftime advantage.

Rutgers and Monmouth each traded a pair of goals to start the second half as two more scores from Welsh made it a 14-4 game. The Hawks pulled to within eight points with back-to-back goals from Rachel Feirstein and Kaitlin Feeney (14-6).

Marino brought the Rutgers lead back to nine with her fourth goal of the contest, but Monmouth responded with two scores, cutting the deficit to seven points (15-8). Watts became the fourth Scarlet Knight with multiple goals in the game as she added three-straight goals, while junior midfielder Brittany Davis (Wading River, N.Y.) chipped in her first goal of the season to close out the second half and seal the 19-9 Rutgers win.

Junior attacker Danielle Mascera (Verona, N.J.) led the Scarlet Knights with a career-high four assists. Steinber assisted on three RU goals, while Anderson and redshirt freshman Amanda Trendell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) each tallied an assist. Sophomores Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Aimee Chotikul (Baltimore, Md.) shared time in goal with Kalata starting the game and Chotikul playing the second half. Kalata allowed just two goals and posted six saves, while Chotikul made three saves on the day.

On the defensive end, freshman defender Chelsea Intrabartola (Commack, N.Y.) had a game-high four caused turnovers and led RU with three ground balls.

The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Friday, April 15, when they resume BIG EAST play and take on Louisville at 5 p.m. at UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
