UConn Tops Cincy for First Big East Win
from press release
STORRS, Conn. -- Behind five goals from M.E.
Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and three from Kiersten Tupper (Camillus,
N.Y.), the University of Connecticut lacrosse team was able to put
up 19 goals for the second time this season as they defeated
Cincinnati, 19-9. The victory marked the first in BIG EAST play for
the Huskies as they are now 7-6 overall and 1-4 in conference
Lapham's five goals marked the third time this season that she has tallied five or more, and with her two assists she marked the first time that she has tallied seven points in a game. Senior Jessica Mucci (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) notched her first collegiate goal against the Bearcats this afternoon, while Dorian Gilmartin-Dzitko (Hillsborough, N.J.) tallied her first of the season.
After letting Cincinnati get on the board first just 1:30 into the contest, the Huskies took control and held at least a two-goal lead for the remainder of the game. Mucci's goal in the second minute tied the game, and then four straight goals from Lapham, Morgan O'Reilly (West Sayville, N.Y.) and Lauren Kahn (Nanuet, N.Y.) gave UConn a 5-1 lead just eight minutes into the first half.
The Bearcats and the Huskies traded goals for the next nine minutes, as Cincinnati closed the gap to 8-6 with 13 minutes remaining before the end of the first half. UConn closed the first half with five-straight goals though, as they went into halftime with a 13-6 advantage. UConn's 13 goals in the first half marked the most scored in a half since 2003 when the Huskies put up 14 goals against Fairfield.
The Huskies opened the second half with back-to-back goals from Tupper and Lapahm to extend UConn's lead to 15-6. A strong Husky defense allowed just three Cincinnati goals throughout the rest of the half and the UConn offense was able to tally four more of their own for the 19-9 victory.
Throughout the contest the Huskies outshot Cincinnati, 34-20
while they also held an 18-12 lead in ground balls and a 16-14
advantage in draw controls.
Along with her goal, Mucci tallied a team-high three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Lapham and O'Reilly each had a team-best four draw controls, while Mackenzie Rainone tallied two ground balls and two caused turnovers along with two goals and one assist.

The Huskies will play their final home game of the 2011 season on Saturday (April 23) when they welcome Louisville for a 12:00 noon contest. Saturday's contest will serve as senior day for the group of; Stefanie Burra, Lauren Gunning, Jessica Mucci, Katie Parker and Lauren Sparks and the Huskies will congratulate the group with a brief pregame ceremony.
