Manhattan Ladies Release '11 Spring Slate

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – A 14-game schedule, highlighted by seven home contests will headline the 2011 Manhattan College women's lacrosse season as announced by first-year Coach Victoria Latino Wednesday.

"We are very excited about our upcoming spring season," Latino said. "We have seven non-conference contests against challenging opponents before we open a difficult conference schedule. All 14 games will challenge our lacrosse ability but we will be up to the task and prepared to play come February."

Anchored by a tremendous returning core and five exciting freshman recruits, the Lady Jaspers will head into the spring beaming with confident after an impressive fall ball season. The action gets underway on Feb. 16, with a 3 p.m. road contest at Stony Brook University. Following a two-week break, Manhattan will play host to Wagner College in their home opener on March 2. First draw is set for 4 p.m.

Back on the road after a one-game homestand, the Green and White head to Fairfield, Conn. for a 3 p.m. contest with Sacred Heart University on March 5. Continuing play against the "Constitution State", Manhattan welcomes Central Connecticut State to Riverdale for a March 10 matchup beginning at 5 p.m.

Traveling to Baltimore, Md., the Lady Jaspers will battle the University of Maryland- Baltimore County on March 13 at noon. Returning from the trip, Manhattan will host two straight games at Gaelic Park against the University of Louisville and Long Island University on March 19 and 23, respectively. First draw is set for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

With three-straight away games to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, Manhattan College will serve as the road team in contests against Iona College, Canisius College and Niagara University. Beginning on March 27, the team will head to New Rochelle, N.Y. for an 11 a.m. game against the Gaels before a trip to Western New York for April 1 and 3 meetings with the Golden Griffins and Purple Eagles. The two start times are set for 7 p.m. and noon.

Returning to their friendly confines, the Lady Jaspers welcome Siena College for a home MAAC contest at 7 p.m. In their final non-conference match of the season, Manhattan travels to Lewisburg, Pa. to take on Bucknell University beginning at 4 p.m.

Wrapping up the conference season with two home contests, Manhattan will welcome Fairfield University and Marist College to Riverdale. The Stags come to town on April 15 while the Red Foxes will be the Lady Jaspers' "Senior Night" opponents on April 17. Both games will be played under the lights at Gaelic Park with first draw set for 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Selecting the top four team teams from the conference, the 2011 MAAC Championships will be held at Iona College on April 29 and May 1.

It was also announced this afternoon that seniors Tara Convery (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) and Phelicia VanOverbeke (Grosse Point, Mich./Grosse Point North) will serve as co-captains for the women's lacrosse program this season.
