Lafayette Handles Wagner, White Gets Six

from press release

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team picked up right where it left off against Liberty, downing Wagner 18-7 on Wednesday afternoon at Wagner College Stadium. Ana White's six-point effort (four goals, two assists) led Lafayette to its second straight double digit win.

The victory improves Lafayette to 2-0, the team's best start since it opened the 1983 campaign with consecutive wins.

"We were very pleased with the effort put forth today by our entire team," head coach Alison Fisher said. "A lot of people made positive contributions and we did a nice job controlling the pace and stopping Wagner's runs. I am very proud of our kids for not becoming complacent after Saturday's win and instead building on our positive momentum."

Lafayette opened the scoring when Laura Kleiber connected with White just 1:31 into the game. White's third tally of the season beat Wagner (0-2) goalkeeper Morgan Roach to give Lafayette an advantage it wouldn't relinquish.

Following a foul on the Seahawks at the 22:04 mark of the opening half, senior Margaux LeBuffe capitalized on a free-position attempt to make it 2-0 in favor of Lafayette.

Less than 90 seconds later, Wagner responded with its first score of the contest after a Lafayette turnover. Erika Bulken took advantage of the miscue and beat Mimi Connell to cut the deficit in half.

The Leopards answered the Wagner goal by netting eight straight on the other end to take a 10-1 advantage with 5:44 remaining the half. Reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Addie Godfrey started the stretch with an unassisted marker at 17:15. Forty-five ticks later and after a Connell save, junior Jessica Rothstein added another goal to make it 4-1.

At 15:03, Victoria Maxon linked up with Godfrey for the junior's second score of the game. White then added another before Kleiber found the back of the net for her second point, stretching the lead to 7-1.

A pair of goals 36 seconds apart, the first by LeBuffe off a feed from Rothstein and Rothstein's second of the game increased the lead to 9-1 with 8:21 showing on the clock.

With less than six minutes to play in the half, Courtney Landolfe ripped a free-position shot off the post. Junior Cammie Linville scooped up the ground ball and scored to give Lafayette a nine-goal lead.

Two Wagner goals made it 10-3, but White scored twice to regain the nine-goal cushion. Wagner's Melanie Garces scored her second of the afternoon right before halftime and Lafayette took a 12-4 lead into the break.

The Maroon and White outscored Wagner 6-4 over the final 30 minutes, as Erin Steel and Kleiber each scored once on free-position opportunities. Linville and Godfrey each added a pair, as well, to complete the scoring for Lafayette.

Lafayette outshot Wagner 34-24 and was four of seven in free-position attempts. The Seahawks held the edge in ground balls, 20-17, and draw controls, 15-12. Connell recorded eight saves in the Lafayette cage.
