Tar Heels Move to 5-0 With 18-9 Win Over Vandy

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Third-ranked North Carolina got five goals and two assists from Laura Zimmerman and five goals and one assist from Abbey Friend as it defeated 10th-ranked Vanderbilt 18-9 on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The win improves the Tar Heels to 5-0 this season and drops the Commodores to 1-1.

Joining Zimmerman and Friend on the balanced Tar Heel scoring attack was Becky Lynch (three goals and two assists), Taylor George (three goals), Kara Cannizzaro (two goals) and Emily Garrity (one assist). Katie Mastropieri and Ally Carey led Vanderbilt with three goals each. Carly Linthicum, Kacie Connors and Hannah Clark each scored single goals for the Commodores.

Carolina out-shot Vandy 30-18 and gathered 21 ground balls to the Commodores' eight.

George started the Tar Heels off quickly with a goal less than a minute into the game, taking a pass from Lynch and scoring for a 1-0 lead. Zimmerman then scored on a free position attempt 30 seconds later. Cannizzaro made it 3-0 at the 24:56 mark with an unassisted goal, and George followed with her second goal, wrapping around the cage to score unassisted for a 4-0 lead that forced a Vandy timeout at 22:30.

Vandy's Mastropieri cut the lead to 4-1 with an unassisted goal at 20:29, coming from behind the cage to score past UNC's Lauren Maksym. Lynch and Zimmerman teamed up for a pretty goal to make it 5-1 with Lynch scoring off a pass from Zimmerman. Clark and Friend traded goals in the next few minutes to make it 6-2 UNC with 13:45 left in the half.

By the end of the half, Carolina held a 10-5 lead. The Tar Heels gathered 11 ground balls to Vanderbilt's four in the first half and UNC outshot the Commodores, 16-6, in the opening 30 minutes.Lynch scored her third goal of the game less than three minutes into the second half, making the score 11-5 Tar Heels. Just 10 seconds later, Friend scored her third goal off a pass from Zimmerman on the fast break off the draw, making it 12-5 UNC.

Kacie Connors cut the lead back to six with an unassisted goal for the Commodores at 24:35, then Mastropieri's third goal came at 24:15 to make the score 12-7. Carey pulled Vandy within four goals at 12-8 with a free position goal at the 19:19 mark.

Zimmerman's third goal of the game came at 15:08 and broke the 3-0 scoring run for Vandy. Zimmerman scored again less than a minute later off a pass from Friend, making it 14-8 with 14:19 to go. Carey scored her third goal for Vandy at 11:19 to make it 14-9. A Canizzaro goal made it 15-9 with under eight minutes to play, forcing a Commodore timeout. Two more goals from Friend and one more from Zimmerman iced the game at 18-9.

Carolina will return to action next Saturday at 3 p.m. against Penn at Fetzer Field.
