Takacs Leads Cal to Win Over Detroit
from press release
SAN DIEGO - Megan Takacs scored six goals to
lead California to an 18-9 nonconference win over Detroit Mercy on
Thursday afternoon at Aztec Field on the campus of San Diego State.
The Golden Bears improved their record to 2-2 after the first
meeting between the two teams in women's lacrosse. The Titans fell
Cal held a 9-3 lead at halftime.
"I was really proud of how we adjusted and made in-game tactical adjustments throughout the game," Cal head coach Ginger Miles said. "Whether it was adjusting to what offensive patterns they were running, to what looks we were getting or to how the game was officiated, we did great job of making adjustments. That hurt us in the Oregon game. Today I'm happy and proud to see, after the first 10 minutes, us doing a good job of regrouping and fixing the mistakes.
"We were down early and clawed our way back. Detroit called a timeout, which actually worked in our favor. It was a good opportunity for us to talk to the girls and go over the points we made before the game, and from that point forward I think we carried the momentum of the game."
Junior midfielder Melissa Humphrey and sophomore midfielder Paige Gasparino scored four points apiece after each collected one goal and three assists for the Bears. Junior attacker Alexa Rozelle scored a hat trick. Senior Emily Abbood and freshman Gaby Christman each scored two goals, while senior Vail Horn, sophomore Teresa Li and sophomore Amelia Burke each scored once.
Abbood also led the Bears with four draw controls and four ground balls.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan McGinnis tallied six saves, while junior Kelly McCarthy made two saves in relief.
"It was a real all-around team effort," Miles added. "Takacs stood out with her six goals, and a lot of people contributed. We got to integrate a lot of players, especially our San Diego players, including Kelly McCarthy, who got the chance to get in and play in front of their home crowd."
The Bears next play first-year program San Diego State in an MPSF match on Saturday, March 10, in San Diego.
