Drexel Overcomes City Rival LaSalle

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's lacrosse team extends its winning streak to three after defeating La Salle on the road, 10-7. The Dragons outshot the Explorers 31-24 and went 6-8 in free position attempts. Junior Alyse Maiden led the attack with three goals and two assists for five points to help the squad overcome a 5-5 tie at half. The Dragons improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 away.

La Salle put pressure on Drexel's defense early after winning the opening draw control. Freshman Claire Andrews fired a shot, but goalkeeper Amanda Santandrea's save held the game scoreless. La Salle's Nora McGurkin recovered the loose ball and fed the ball back to Andrews for a quick goal, 1-0. The Explorers went on a three-goal run. At 11:48 remaining in the first half, Amanda Norcini answered back with a free position goal, 3-1.

Just over a minute later, Alissa Watts took advantage of a free position opportunity and cut La Salle's lead to one, 3-2. The Dragons turned the ball over following the draw control allowing La Salle back on the attacking end. The Explorers scored two consecutive goals extending their lead back to three, 5-2. In the final six minutes of the first half, Drexel went 3-3 in free position attempts to tie the game, 5-5.

At 26:33 in the second half, Alyse Maiden tallied her third goal of the game as the Dragons regained the lead. Alissa Watts looked to add another point for Drexel, but La Salle's goalkeeper Megan Corliss came up with a big save. Kristin Kopenhaver picked up the ground allowing Drexel work the ball around and start a new play. Senior Jaclyn Klunder finished with a goal from teammate Maiden's pass. La Salle scored two goals to tie the game, 7-7, but the Dragons scored three unanswered goals for the win. Drexel didn't allow a goal in the final 14 minutes of play.

Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Santandrea set a new season-high with 12 saves. She now has 36 stops on the season. La Salle's Megan Corliss had 19 saves.

The Drexel women's lacrosse team returns to Vidas Field on Wednesday, March 14 against Longwood and on Sunday as the Dragons host UMBC.
