Rutgers Downs Monmouth Behind Steinberg's Hat Trick

from press release

Piscataway, N.J. — Propelled by a career day from senior midfielder Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.), with five goals and two assists, Rutgers women’s lacrosse downed Monmouth, 13-7, Saturday afternoon at the RU Turf Field.

Annie McGinley aided the effort of the Scarlet Knights (3-3) with three goals and one assist. For Steinberg, it marked the 10th hat trick of her career, including fourth this season.

A team effort, seven Scarlet Knights posted at least a point, with five scoring at least one goal. The Hawks (1-6) were led by Sam Lillo with three scores.

In the cage, junior goalie Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) earned the win with nine saves. Junior Aimee Chotikul (Baltimore, Md.) also saw action in the net for RU.

Rutgers got on the board early, winning the draw and sprinting down the field to score just 25 seconds in. Monmouth answered with two goals from Sam Lillo before RU evened the score on a Steinberg to Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) connection.

After Lillo’s third score of the afternoon, RU netted four of the final five goals before the break to take a 7-4 lead into halftime. McGinley did most of the damage, scoring twice in the run.

After trading goals to begin the second half, the Scarlet Knights ripped off a 6-1 run, paced by three goals from Steinberg. The run started with McGinley dishing to the senior co-captain off a free position opportunity and ended with a nifty move from Steinberg for an unassisted score at the 6:25 mark to give RU its biggest advantage, 13-6. MU would score a free position goal to account for the final score.

Rutgers will play three of the next four games at home, starting with Saint Joseph’s Wednesday, March 21. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the RU Turf Field inside the Stadium Complex. It will be the first home game under the lights for the Scarlet Knights.
