St. Francis Comes Back Over SDSU in Overtime

from press release

LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis University women's lacrosse team erased a four-goal halftime deficit to close out its non-conference schedule with a 16-15 overtime win over San Diego State at DeGol Field on Friday.

The visiting Aztecs (3-8) rolled out to a 7-2 lead in the first period before the Red Flash began to regain its footing to cut the score 9-5 by the intermission.

Casey Burk (Moorestown, N.J./Delran) opened the second half scoring to narrow the gap to three before San Diego State responded with a pair of goals.  Catherine Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua), Rachel Larson (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) and Danielle Conwell (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) strung together consecutive scores to pull SFU to within three but the Aztecs managed to stay a step ahead of the Flash with timely goals.

Down 13-10 with 9:50 to play, Conwell and Jenna Griffiths (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline) teamed up to score the next four goals to finally put Saint Francis (2-8) ahead.

The run took up all but 2:22 of regulation, with proved just enough time for San Diego State to find the equalizer.  Madeline Ross converted on a free position shot with nine seconds to go to force an extra frame.

Helming and Kate Simmons (Delran, N.J./Delran) gave the Flash a two-goal edge in the OT period before SDSU's Michaela Jarvis found the back of the net with 50 seconds.  This time, however, the SFU defense held to give the Flash its first home win of the season.

Red Flash goalie Caitlin Flynn (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame) registered 10 saves in the match, including some key stops in toward the end of regulation and in overtime.  Conwell and Burk each racked up four goals to lead the offense.  Conwell also tallied three assists, as did Kara Ledgerwood (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua).

Bailey Ewing scored four goals for the Aztecs.

Saint Francis is back in action on Saturday when it visits Robert Morris for a 1 p.m. tilt.
