Mount St. Mary's Inches Closer to NEC Tournament

from press release

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Jen Semler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) registered her third-straight hat trick to propel Mount St. Mary's past Wagner 8-6 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action on Sunday to inch the Mount (7-9, 6-2 NEC) to an NEC Tournament berth.

Semler, who posted eight goals and seven assists in the first 13 games, has recorded 10 goals and two assists in her last three matches to help the Mountaineers to three wins in that stretch. The senior posted the squad's first goal of the day at 3:57 and then the first two goals of the second half on 8-meter goals at 33:41 and 40:06 to put Mount St. Mary's on the brink of clinching its 10th-straight league postseason berth and 14th in the last 15 years. The Mount sits at 6-2 in the NEC and is fighting with six teams for four playoff spots, but hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with Central Connecticut State, Robert Morris and Sacred Heart.

Kaitlyn Larrimore (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) added two goals while Lindsay Diaz(Timonium, Md./Dulaney) and Bridget McGann (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Regis Jesuit) each found the twine. Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made 10 saves in the winning effort.

Lauren Petrik paced the Seahawks (6-9, 1-6 NEC) with two markers while Sam Morin, Jillian Maloney, Megan Sardella and Michela Galante each posted a goal in the loss.

Wagner College Stadium has been a place of horror for Mount St. Mary's sometimes in the past, but the Mount scored the first four games in the match and held on after a late charge from Wagner to earn the victory. The Mount is now 14-3 all-time against the Seahawks and 6-3 in Staten Island, but the squad has not lost to Wagner since the 2005 season.

For the second-straight game, Semler kick started the offense only on Sunday she found the back of the net instead of assisting the first marker of the day at 3:57. Diaz then scored unassisted at 4:55 before Morgan Dalton (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) set up Larrimore at 6:44 and McGann converted a free-position opportunity at 8:17 for a 4-0 margin.

Wagner scored the final two goals of the stanza to trim the margin to 4-2 at halftime. Galante posted an 8-meter tally at 13:27 and Petrik scored unassisted with 20 seconds left in the half to make it a two-goal game at the break.

Semler then started the scoring in the second half with a pair of free-position goals at 33:41 and 40:06 to give the Mountaineers a 6-2 lead.

The Seahawks answered right back with a free-position score by Maloney at 41:08 and a Morin unassisted tally at 50:40 to cut the margin to 6-4.

The two teams then traded goals in the final nine minutes. Larrimore found the back of the net off a feed from Hannah Gutcher (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) at 51:37, but Sardella answered when she took a pass from Erika Bulken at 54:48. Diaz scored unassisted at 57:50 before Petrik posted a free-position tally at 58:30 to end the scoring with Mount St. Mary's coming away with an 8-6 victory.

Gabe Little (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) fueled the defense with four caused turnovers and three ground balls while Melissa Cox (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) added two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Diaz and Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) each scooped up three draw controls.

Mount St. Mary's, who still has a shot to host the NEC Tournament with a victory, concludes the regular season at Monmouth on Friday. Match time is 3 p.m.
