Parker Season High Leads Davidson Over Longwood

from press release

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Alanna Parker found the back of the net a season-high five times, leading scorer Ann Fucigna had another big game and Davidson earned an 18-14 win at home against Longwood in a National Lacrosse Conference contest on Friday night in Richardson Stadium.

The game was dedicated to the One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love, a former University of Virginia women’s lacrosse player.

Parker, who pushed her goal total to 20 on the season, scored four of her career-high tying five goals in the second half, including three in the final seven minutes of the game to help hold off a charging Lancer squad. Longwood (2-11, 2-3 NLC) had cut a four-goal lead (15-11) down to two after back-to-back scores from Jamie Brentlinger in a 30-second snap and around eight minutes left in the game.

Parker went back-to-back herself at the 6:45 and 5:44 marks to give Davidson (6-8, 3-2 NLC) a cushion of 17-13, before she closed out the scoring with 22 seconds left on the clock. One of the three goals came off a great caused turnover by the junior captain in the Longwood zone, allowing her to go one-on-one with the goalie in open space and she converted on the attempt.

Fucigna pushed her goal total 37 on four scores as she now has a team-best 51 points. It was her 12th multi-goal game and the third time this year she has netted four or more goals in a game.

Erin Doherty followed up her four-goal outing last week at Howard with three more goals and added assist. Paige Logan tied her season-high with a pair of goals.

Longwood was led by Brentlinger’s five goals, while Lauren Prasnicki had five points on three goals and a pair of assists. Bentlinger helped the Lancers get back in the contest when she started a four-goal run with a free-position goal at the 24:05 mark in the second half. The rally trimmed the Wildcats’ lead down to from 13-7 to 13-11 with 17:34 left.

The first half went back-and-forth. It featured four ties through the first 19 minutes. Davidson knotted it up at 5-all after Catherine Schmidt scored her sixth goal of the season at the 10:54 mark.

Doherty followed with her first goal of the game and then had a nice assist on a pass to a wide open Emily Cooke off a free-position attempt later to make it 7-5 in favor of the ‘Cats.

Davidson would close the half on a 3-1 run, with Fucigna, Doherty and Parker each scoring to make it 10-7.

The lead would grow to six after the Wildcats opened the new stanza with three straight goals, topped off by Logan’s goal at the 25:55 mark.

Longwood battled back behind Brentlinger, but Parker was able to counter in the late stages of the game and helped the Wildcats seal up their third NLC win of the season. The win also snapped a four-game skid in the all-time series against the Lancers.

Davidson held advantages in shots (37-26), draw controls (19-14) and groundballs (13-11). Doherty matched her career-best with nine draw controls and Diane Girling picked up four to go with a couple of groundballs.

Rebecca Garman had three of Davidson’s eight caused turnovers and Abigail Doelger had a pair of her own.

Junior Jessica Melby came up with seven saves between the pipes for her fifth win of the season.

The Wildcats turn around and play their final home contest Sunday, April 22, against Liberty at 1 p.m. They will honor their two seniors (Erin Keitel and?Jenna Mugele) prior to the start of the game.
