FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team outscored the visiting George Mason University (0-1), 7-3, in the second half to come from behind and earn the 12-9 victory at the Athletics Complex in Farmville on Wednesday afternoon. The Lancers were paced by junior Mary Barondess/Centreville with four goals for four points. Senior Jamie Brentlinger/Gambrills, Maryland added three goals and one assist for four points, as well. Longwood (2-0) will travel to Campbell University for its first-ever Big South Conference game on Tuesday, February 26 beginning at 7 p.m.

George Mason opened the game with three quick goals in the first 14 minutes of play to take an early advantage. Longwood answered with its first score of the day when sophomore Liz Trainer/Ellicott City, Maryland sent a direct pass to classmate Kacey Norwood/Chantilly, who dodged a Mason defender and put a shot on goal to make it a 3-1 game with 14:44 remaining in the first half. Sparked by the Norwood goal, the Lancers' offense went to work, scoring three more, including a free-position goal from Barondess, to take a 4-3 advantage with 9:31 left to play in the half.

The Patriots would not stay down for long, as the visitors answered with a 3-0 run to regain the lead at 6-4 with less than a minute still to go in the period. Longwood would score once more in the waning seconds of the first half, as Barondess made an aggressive break through the circle and put a high, hard shot on goal to send the Lancers into halftime down just 6-5.

Longwood scored the first goal of the second half when Norwood came from behind the net before sending the ball past the stick of George Mason's keeper, knotting the game at 6-6. The Patriots would lead once more at 7-6, but the Lancers answered with a pair of goals from Brentlinger and Barondess to pull ahead, 8-7, with less than 12 minutes to go. GMU tied the score for the last time at 8-8, but LU responded with four of the game's final five goals, including a score from freshman Sarah Butler/Oakleigh South, Victoria, Australia with just one second on the clock, to seal the 12-9 victory.

In addition to four points apiece from Barondess and Brentlinger, Longwood was aided by three points each from junior Lauren Prasnicki/Lexington and Norwood, while Trainer added two. Freshman Katie McHugh/Burke and Butler rounded out the goal scorers for the Lancers with one apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Christian Acker/Moorestown, New Jersey turned in a complete-game performance with eight saves.
