Vermont Keeps Marist Winless with 16-9 Win

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Marcie Marino, Sydney Mas and Jessica Roach each tallied hat tricks to lead Vermont to a 16-9 win over visiting Marist in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday at Virtue Field. Vermont improves to 1-1, while Marist falls to 0-3 on the season.

Mas got the scoring started for the Catamounts with an unassisted tally just over two minutes into play. Roach and Marino added goals 30 seconds apart to give Vermont a 3-0 lead at the 23:06 mark of the first half. Marist answered back with three straight goals, including two from Lexi Brannigan, which tied the score, 3-3, with just under 16 minutes to play in the half.

Justin Allen added an unassisted goal to give the Catamounts a one goal lead at the 13:17 mark, but Marist answered back with scores from Ashley Miller and Amanda Tuck to take its first lead of the contest. Mas collected her second tally of the game off a centering pass from Allen to bring things back even, 5-5, with just over five minutes to play in the first. Vermont went on to score the next 10 goals, spanning from the end of the first half through the beginning of the second, to push its lead to 15-5 with 19 minutes to play in the game. During the streak, UVM got three quick goals from Emma Kelly, Vanessa VanderZalm and Ariel Nicholas in a span of just 20 seconds.

The Red Foxes tallied four of the next five goals, including two from Miller, but were unable to complete the comeback, eventually falling 16-9.

Vermont had nine different goal scorers in the game, including Marino, Mas and Roach, who led the team with three goals apiece. Roach also dished out four assists for a total of seven points. VanderZalm also added two tallies on the afternoon.

Goalie Charlotte Lyons earned her first career win in net for the Catamounts, stopping 10 Marist shots on the day. Ashley Casiano made 12 saves but took the loss for the Red Foxes.

Vermont outshot Marist 34-28, and held advantages in ground balls (26-24) and draw controls (15-12) as well.
