George Mason Picks Up Second Straight Victory

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Behind a stout defense and balanced offense, the George Mason lacrosse team picked up its second straight win defeating American Monday night, 14-10, at George Mason Stadium. The win pushed the Patriots to 2-3 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 0-5.

Rachel Obregon led Mason once again tallying four goals, all coming in the second half, while Allie Hilderbrandt and Katie Mascolo each added two. Laura Lesky recorded a goal and two assists, as did Caitlin Formato. Mason won the edge in draw controls (15-11) and committed just eight turnovers in the contest. Additionally, the Patriots led in shots (31-22) and ground balls (11-10). Brittany Pastrana played the full game in cage to pick up the win and made eight saves.

Mascolo opened the scoring in the first half converting a free position attempt at the 19:00 minute mark before American's Olivia Mangan evened the score with an unassisted tally at 15:28. Mason then scored four of the next five goals capped by Mackenzie Jones' first goal of the season to take a 5-2 lead with 2:43 remaining in the half. American scored the final goal of the half for a 5-3 Mason halftime lead.

The Eagles opened the second half with two unanswered goals to knot the score at 5-5 with 25:51 on the clock before Obregon scored her first goal of the game to put Mason back on top, 6-5, on a Caitlin McGinn assist. American scored the equalizer less than a minute later, but the Patriots' defense would keep the Eagles off the scoreboard for the next 13 minutes while Mason's offense unloaded five goals, including two from Hilderbrandt, to grab an 11-6 lead with 12:03 to play.

The Eagles registered the next two goals to make it an 11-8 ballgame before Obregon scored her 12th and 13thgoals of the season within two minutes of each other and Kirstin Russell recorded her seventh of the year for a 14-8 Mason lead with just over three minutes remaining. American scored the final two goals of the contest for the final 14-10 score.

For American, Alex Lugovina scored four goals, while Teal Harrison drew the loss in cage, recording eight saves. Erin Anderson recorded two caused turnovers and four ground balls for the Patriots, while HIlderbrandt won a career-high six draw controls to lead Mason.

Mason returns to the field at Albany on March 13. Opening draw is slated for 12 p.m.
