Two 10-Point Efforts Boost Winthrop, Crush KSU

from press release

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Freshmen Shannon Gallagher and Megan Wallenhorst each recorded 10 points Friday as the Winthrop lacrosse team routed the Kennesaw State Owls 22-8 in an afternoon contest at Eagle Field. Winthrop improved its record to 5-4 overall with the victory while Kennesaw State fell to 0-5 on the season.

Gallagher achieved her 10 points with seven goals and three assists on 11 shots. She was 1-of-2 on free-position attempts. Wallenhorst netted six goals and added four assists on 10 shots and was also 1-of-2 on free-position attempts.

"This was a great way to end our spring break," head coach John Sung said. "It was a great performance from Shannon and Megan and an overall great boost for our team. We've got to keep pushing from here. We'll give them a few days off then start preparing for Jacksonville."

Winthrop took a little while to get into a groove Friday. Megan Wallenhorst got the scoring started just over three minutes into the contest. After the Owls tied the game two minutes later, back-to-back goals by Shannon Gallagher gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead.

Kennesaw State stayed close through the first 15 minutes as the Eagles only led by three at 6-3, but Winthrop then turned up the offensive pressure netting six unanswered goals and outscoring the Owls 9-2 in the final 11:29 of the first half to take a 15-5 lead into the break.

With a running clock throughout the second half, the scoring slowed, but the Eagles were able to grab as much as a 15-goal cushion at 22-7. Winthrop held Kennesaw to only three goals in the second half en route to the 22-8 victory.

The Eagles finished the game with a season-high 43 shots including 35 shots on goal. Winthrop dominated the center circle, taking 20 draw controls to Kennesaw's 12. Hayley Krause led the Eagles with 10 draw controls.

Winthrop will return to action on Friday, March 22 at Jacksonville University of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
