Lehigh Runs Past Howard on Senior Day

from press release

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Mountain Hawks got off to an 8-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game and wouldn't look back as the Lehigh women's lacrosse team cruised to an 18-6 win over Howard on Sunday. It was Senior Day as a trio of seniors was recognized prior to their final home game in the Brown & White. Twelve different Mountain Hawks scored a goal in an exceptional all-around effort.

"We got off to a really nice start and shared the ball well," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We were determined to do that."

Freshman Megan Paytas led the way with five points behind two goals and three assists. Sophomore Carli Sukonik had three goals and an assist while sophomore Emily Solenberger had a career game with two goals and an assist, including the first goal of her career. Senior Anna Patterson and freshman Lauren Molina each posted three points as well, behind a goal and two assists.

Patterson, Julie McBrien and MaryLeah DiNisco were honored in a pregame ceremony.

"We really celebrate those three," said Redfern. "They've been pretty resilient. We do have a young team this year and they've stayed the course. It's nice to send them off with a W. They've been part of a lot of great wins in our program, most of them coming when they were younger players themselves. We're happy to send them off with a W."

McBrien got the scoring started less than a minute in, then after 3:33 without a goal, the Mountain Hawks scored seven times in the span of 5:38 to open an 8-0 lead following junior Chelsea Retaleato's sixth goal of the season.

Howard got on the scoreboard less than a minute later, but the Mountain Hawks answered with six straight to close out the first half. Freshman Kris Abens finished a feed from sophomore Scarlett Nawrocki to make it 14-1 following 30 minutes of play.

Sophomore Michelle Abramczyk posted her first-career goal at 21:56, but Howard's Cynthia Small scored three of her game-high five goals consecutively to pull within 15-5 with 10:27 remaining. Lehigh answered with three of the final four goals, including the first of sophomore Kelly Scott's career, for the 18-6 win.

Lehigh held the final edge in shots (30-14), groundballs (18-8) and draw controls (16-10). Junior Alexandra Fitzpatrick stopped the only shot sent her way, before being relieved by DiNisco who posted three saves. Candace Ross made 11 stops for the Bison.

Lehigh will hit the road for Worcester, Mass. following Sunday's game against Howard for its final game of 2013 against Patriot League opponent Holy Cross on Friday, Apr. 19.

"I think it's really important for us to go up there and have a really strong effort, and to get a W would be really meaningful for this team," said Redfern. "I think we're capable."
