Marquette Down: No. 5 Syracuse Wins Again

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 5/5 Syracuse scored the first 10 goals of the game and went on to defeat Marquette, 18-6, in its final regular-season home game in the Carrier Dome on Sunday, April 21. The win is the seventh straight for the Orange.

"I thought the team came out focused, ready to go," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "They played very well and allowed us to play everybody on Senior Day. I thought overall it was a good day for Syracuse lacrosse."

Senior Taylor Nims and junior Alyssa Murray led a balanced scoring attack for the Orange as 12 different players scored a goal. Nims posted career highs in points (5), goals (4) and assists (1), while Murray had one goal and tied her career high with four assists. Sophomore Ella Thorpe and freshman Kayla Treanor finished with four points each.

The Orange (12-3) dominated the first 18 minutes, taking a 10-0 lead before Marquette (2-14) recorded its first shot. SeniorBridget Daley started the offensive outburst with a goal 1:22 into the contest on an assist from Treanor. Sophomore Devon Collins and Treanor each had two goals during the run, while Murray had a goal and two assists. After Kenzie Brown put the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard at the 12:47 mark, Nims, sophomore Kailah Kempney and freshman Kristiana Ferguson each found the back of the net to give Syracuse a 13-1 halftime lead.

The second half started much like the first as the Orange netted three unanswered goals by Nims, sophomore Paige Saviaand Thorpe for its largest lead of the game at 16-1. Nims' fourth goal of the day gave SU an 18-3 lead before Marquette closed out the contest with three straight goals for the 18-6 final.

Syracuse outshot Marquette, 39-8, and picked up 24 ground balls to 13 for the Golden Eagles. The Orange won 24-of-37 draw controls. Junior Alyssa Costantino made the start in goal for SU and recorded one save in the first half. FreshmanShannon Byrne recorded her first career save in the second half. Sarah Priem posted 13 saves for Marquette.

Prior to the game, Syracuse's senior class of Daley, Nims, Becca Block, Linley Block, Trenna Hill, Caz-Marie Norwich, Tori Praino, Michelle Tumolo and Mandy Willison were honored for their dedication to the program.

The Orange closes out the regular season on the road against two ranked opponents next weekend. Syracuse takes on No. 13/17 Loyola on Friday, April 26 before playing at No. 8/8 Georgetown on Sunday, April 28.
