Massetti Leads LaSalle From Six Down Past Liberty

from press release

PHILADELPHIA - Rookie Toni Massetti drained five goals and assisted on another, and the La Salle lacrosse squad stormed back from a 9-3 deficit to defeat Liberty 11-10 at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Explorers (4-3) outscored the Flames (1-7) 8-2 in the second half to earn the hard-fought win, which included a Flame goal being called off for an illegal crosse late in the second half.

Caitlyn Brostrand added three points on two goals and an assist, Erin McCabe added two scores, and Katelyn Fay and Allee Ilgenfritz added a goal apiece.

Morgan Becker, Sam Struss and Nina Dunay led the Flames with two goals each.

"While we certainly don't want to put ourselves in the hole we were in, we were proud of the fight the team showed in the second half against a well-coached Liberty team," Head Coach Candace Taglianetti Bossell said. "We had a couple players sidelined today with injuries and illness, and it was great to see Toni [Massetti] put together a performance she was capable of."

Liberty rattled off the first four goals of the game over the first 11 minutes, including both of Becker's goals.

McCabe got the Explorers on the board at the 18:00 mark, taking a feed from Fay off of a woman-up free position attempt.

The Flames responded with two more over the next 10 minutes to take a 6-1 lead at the 8:22 mark of the first half.

Ilgenfritz converted a free position goal at 7:50 for the Explorers' second goal and Abby O'Donnell found McCabe two minutes later to cut the Flames lead to 6-3.

However, the Flames finished out the half with two more goals including a woman-up goal with 16 seconds until halftime to take an 8-3 lead into the break.

The Flames added one more to go up 9-3 just under four minutes into the second half when Courtney Brown converted an unassisted shot.

At that point, the Explorers caught fire, rattling off the next eight straight goals spanning nearly the entire rest of the game. Massetti drained her first two at 25:23 and 20:48. Brostrand scored at 18:33 and 14:40, to sandwich a Fay goal at 16:42.

Massetti then went to work again, rattling off three more over a four-minute span to give the Explorers an 11-9 lead.

The Flames found the back of the net with around two minutes remaining, but a well-timed stick check found an illegal crosse to negate the goal.

The Flames got one more when Michaela Rich scored with 1:28 remaining, but the Explorer defense held down the stretch for the final 11-10 tally.

La Salle owned a 27-24 shot advantage and 15-9 draw control lead. Liberty edged the Explorers on ground balls, 20-19.

Explorer keeper Gabby Antonelli got the win, stopping five shots in 40:25 of play. Chelsea DiIonno saw 19:35 of first-half action, making three saves. The Flames' Kristen Masullo took the loss, making 11 saves in the effort.

The Explorers head back on the road on Wednesday with a tilt at Delaware State at 7 p.m.
