BU Upends Navy in Patriot League Semifinal

BALTIMORE – Senior Elizabeth Morse scored with 19.6 seconds remaining to give the No. 3 seed Boston University women's lacrosse team a 13-12 victory over No. 2 Navy in the Patriot League Semifinals on Thursday night at the Ridley Athletic Complex.

The Terriers (9-9) will now advance to the Patriot League Championship game where they will face top-seeded Loyola Maryland on Saturday (April 26) at 1 p.m. in a battle of league newcomers.

With the victory, BU posted its second win of the season over Navy (14-3) and ended the Mids' quest for their fifth-straight Patriot League Championship.

The Terriers held 10-7 lead with 17:44 remaining in the second half before Navy went on a 5-0 run to go ahead, 12-10. Sophomore Jenny Thompson ended the streak with her third goal of the game to complete her first career hat trick and ignite 3-0 run for the Terriers that was capped with an unassisted goal by Morse to give BU a 13-12 lead with 19.6 seconds remaining.

Senior Becca Church, an All-Patriot League Second Team honoree, also netted a hat trick for the Terriers while sophomore All-League First Team selection Jill Horka finished with two goals and an assist. Senior Sydney Godett and freshman Taylor Hardison added two goals each while junior Lindsay Weiner, an All-League Second Team member, dished out a pair of assists.

Senior Christina Sheridan played the first 52:09 and made eight saves in goal before freshman Caroline Meegan took over. Meegan did not allow a goal in her 7:51 of action. Navy opened the scoring 45 seconds into the game with a strike from Loren Generi. Church then netted the Terriers' first goal on a free position shot but Navy went up 2-1 with an unassisted tally from Jess Fellows.

The Terriers called timeout with 21:05 on the clock and came out of the break with three unanswered goals from Church, Hardison and Thompson to take a 4-2 lead with 16:37 remaining in the opening half. The teams traded goals over the next four minutes, with Godett netting a free position tally and Hardison scoring her second of the game to give the Terriers a 6-4 lead with 12:09 to play.

BU scored the final two goals of the first half, with Horka and Godett each finding the back of the net to give the Terriers an 8-4 lead heading into the break.

Navy posted a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the second period to cut the Terriers' lead to 8-6 before Church completed her hat trick with an assist from Horka with 21:41 to play. The Mids quickly responded with a goal from Aimee Gennaro just over a minute later.

With 17:44 to play, Thompson converted a free position shot to give BU a 10-7 lead. Jill Coughlin scored for the Mids on their next possession to start a 5-0 run for Navy to grab a 12-10 lead with 9:03 remaining.

Thompson halted the run by scoring her third goal of the game with 7:51 to play. With the Mids holding possession with under four minutes to go, Meegan came out of the cage to defend a Navy pass that sailed out of bounds and awarded the ball back to BU. Horka took advantage, as she netted the equalized with 2:07 remaining.

The Terriers won the following draw control with 2:01 remaining and let the clock tick down in attempt to take the last shot of the day. With 19.6 seconds remaining, Morse fired a shot past Cori Caggiano to send BU to the Patriot League Championship.

Navy held a 24-23 advantage in shots and a 17-10 lead in draw controls while the Terriers head a 15-14 edge in ground balls. BU converted 4-of-8 free position attempts while the Mids went 3-of-7.
