Detroit Women Add Five for '15

from Press Release

DETROIT (12/12/2013) - Head coach Laura Maness of the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team has added five individuals to the incoming class for the 2014-15 academic year.

Emma Mucci (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Bloomfield Hills), Emma DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), Brittany Fenney (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga), Taylor Spray (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs), and Jessica Snyder (Northville, Mich./Ladywood) will all join the Titans in the fall of 2014 and be part of the team for the 2015 season.

Mucci was named to the All-Conference Team each of her years as a Hawk at Bloomfield Hills High School. She added All-State Honorable Mention recognition in both 2011 and 2012 and in 2013, she captured All-State Second Team honors. Her 2013 squad was divisional, regional, and Division 1 State Champions finishing with a 19-6 record. Mucci has also played with the club team Detroit Coyotes for the last four years alongside current Titans Lauren Sharkey and Annelise Niermann.

"Emma is very athletic and a workhorse all over the field. She does a lot of the small things that go unnoticed, but positively impact the game. She is solid defensively and an asset on the offensive side of the field as well," said Maness.

DeYoung hails from Grand Rapids and will graduate in 2014 from Grand Rapids Christian High School. A team captain her junior and senior year, she earned All-Conference and All-State Honorable Mention honors as the Eagles went undefeated in conference play, captured a district championship, and played in the semifinals of the regional championship her junior year. Academically, the 2013 campaign brought her All-State Academic Team recognition. Through three years as a prep, she has tallied 83 career points, including a season-best 55 points with 43 goals as a junior. She has also played club lacrosse with the Oasis Lacrosse Club in the summer of 2013 and is currently playing with Rapid Lax.

"Emma is a standout midfielder for her high school program, but we specifically recruited her for her defensive efforts on the field. She is very scrappy and extremely speedy and she fits in well with our style of play," stated Maness.

Fenney was named her high school's team MVP her junior season at Mississauga Secondary School in the Greater Toronto Area. Fenney earned the Junior Athletic Achievement Award for her school as a top performer on the field hockey team in addition to lacrosse. In lacrosse, she was the team captain and led her team in scoring in both her junior and senior years. She played with the club team Brampton Excelsiors in 2013 helping the squad to a silver medal in the Senior-A division. She also played with current Titan Kelsi Pritchard with the club team EDGE Elite in 2011 and 2012.

"Brittany will be playing midfield for us," said Maness. "She has a great field sense and lacrosse IQ. As a high school senior, Brittany was a team leader and impact player on field."

Spray comes to Detroit after attending the same high school as current Titan junior Amanda Guthrie. The Florida connection extends further as Spray also played with the club RC Elite for four years and was on the same team as Guthrie, but also another current Titan in Julie Castner. Spray came into Winter Springs as a freshman and tallied 16 goals in 17 games helping her team reach the state championship semifinal game while Guthrie was a senior. Spray played as a defender her sophomore year starting 18 of 20 games and started all 20 games as a junior netting 20 goals. She helped her team to a district championship in 2012 and 2013 and earned All-Conference First Team honors, All-America Honorable Mention, and made the All-Academic team as a junior.

"Taylor will be playing defense for us. She is a solid defender and is great at causing turnovers and winning 50/50 balls, as well as draw controls and ground balls," added Maness.

Snyder will join her older sister Jaclyn Snyder on the women's lacrosse team in 2014-15 and has family history at Detroit as her grandfather and mother all attended the University in the past. The younger Snyder also played for the Ladywood Blazers as she took home All-League honors and earned the team's Best Offensive Player award as a junior. In the 2012 season, she tallied 68 goals and 25 assists. She played club lacrosse with Team Total Wixom and academically as a sophomore and a junior, she earned the Scholar Athlete award.

"Jess will be playing attack for us and is an aggressive left-handed attacker and a leading scorer for her high school team," stated Maness. "As a junior, her efforts on the field took Ladywood to the state finals for the first time and she will be reunited with her older sister and a former high school teammate in Kylie Birney."

The 2014 women's lacrosse season will officially begin the 2014 season on February 7 as UDM will play at Ohio State in Columbus.
