Saints Double Up Abbey, Take CC Crown

— The No. 4-ranked Limestone College women's lacrosse team claimed the Conference Carolinas tournament title with a 14-7 win over #2-seeded Belmont Abbey on Sunday afternoon at the Queens University Sports Complex. The championship is #1-seeded Saints' fourth title in the last five years. Limestone's record improves to 17-1 as the Crusaders fall to 7-9.

Limestone's Chrissy Grogg (Taberg, N.Y.) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Chelsea Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.), Erin Growney (Rochester, N.Y.), and Raquel Prager (Seaford, N.Y.) also earned All-Tournament Team honors.

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes, but Belmont Abbey tied the score with goals from Laurie Jordan. Limestone jumped out to the 6-2 advantage before the Crusaders could answer with 1:39 left on the clock. The Saints ended the half on strong note with a goal from Prager with 15 seconds left.

The Crusaders struck first in the second half to cut the score to 7-4. Limestone responded with three goals before the Abbey had two goals to cut the Saints' lead to four (10-4). Limestone went on to outscore the Abbey 4-1 in the final 17 minutes for the victory.

Chelsea Treat (Penn Yann, N.Y.) and Renee Albro (Purcellville, Va.) each scored four goals for Limestone, while Raquel Prager (Seaford, N.Y.) had a hat trick. Katie Ilott (Brooklin, Ontario, Canada), Kristen DeMarzi (Huntington, N.Y.), and Britt Howard (Oswego, N.Y.) also scored in the victory.

Ilott had a game-high five draw controls while Prager had three. Chrissy Grogg (Taberg, N.Y.) posted four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Goalkeeper Rashelle McLellan (East Lyme, Conn.) posted six saves.

The Saints outshot the Abbey 31-19, but the Crusaders edged Limestone 18-14 on ground balls. Limestone dominated the draw controls, winning 15 of the game's 23. The Saints were 16-20 in clears as Belmont Abbey was 13-19.

Limestone hosts Rollins College on May 1 at Saints Field in Gaffney, S.C.
