Champ Like: Adelphi Blasts Rollins

from press release

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Rollins women's lacrosse team scored the first goal over No. 1 Adelphi University, but eventually dropped to the two-time defending Division II Champion, 21-9 on Tuesday afternoon. The Tars drop to 2-1 on the young season, while Adelphi opens their 2011 campaign with a record of 1-0.

The Tars were led by Marissa Giannerini, Katy Tyszko, and Sarah Ann Showell who tallied two goals apiece. Giannerini and Tyszko tacked on an assist each to their scoring tally for three points on the afternoon, matched by Cat Kelley and Erica Pagliarulo who each registered a goal and two assists for three points, as well. Anna Townsend rounded out the scoring for Rollins with a goal of her own, making a total of six Tars contributing to the final tally.

Elyse De Lisle made 11 saves against the top-ranked Panthers after seeing a total of 39 shots and 32 shots on frame. Her opposition, Frankie Caridi collected 16 saves as the Tars fired off 36 shots, 25 of which were on target.

Adelphi saw a seven point performance from Kaitlyn Carter, who placed six shots between the pipes and added an assist. Claire Petersen was close on Carter's heels, scoring five goals and earning an assist for six points on the afternoon. Five more Panthers put points on the scoreboard throughout the contest.

Rollins opened up the showdown with the first goal thanks to a rocket of a shot from Giannerini less than four minutes in. The Panthers went on a four-goal stand to pull ahead 4-1 with 13:53 remaining in the period, but Showell was able to break the streak as she placed a shot behind Caridi at the 12 minute mark.

The Panthers bit back with two consecutive goals from Carter to extend the lead to 6-2, but Townsend halted the Panthers' stride on a free-position shot to pull the Tars back to within three.

Adelphi's Petersen answered right back on an unassisted shot that snuck by De Lisle at the 9:06 mark, but Giannerini retorted with an unassisted goal of her own 35 seconds later to set the score at 7-4 with 8:31 on the clock before halftime.

Despite the Tars' best efforts, the Panthers let the flood gates open over the ensuing nine minutes, going on a seven goal sprint ignited by Erica Devito at the 10:10 mark.

Rollins was able to place one last shot between the pipes as the final seconds ticked off the clock thanks to Tyszko, who grabbed a feed from Paglirulo and fired a hard shot over Caridi's left shoulder with one second remaining. At the break, Rollins trailed Adelphi 14-5.

The Tars came out of the half looking for redemption as they notched the first goal of the second half, but the Panthers went on to out-score the Tars 7-4 in second period play to clinch their first victory of the season.

Rollins matched up against the Panthers well on paper, but could not capitalize on their shot placement. The Tars trailed marginally in total shots 39-36, but matched up with Adelphi in ground balls as both teams collected 22 apiece. The Tars got the better of their top-ranked opponent off the draw, winning 17-of-30.

The Rollins women's lacrosse team returns to action on Monday, February 28, when they host Notre Dame College of Ohio.
