No. 6 C.W. Post Survives No. 14 New Haven on Last-Second Goal

from press release

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- Junior midfielder Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) ripped the game-winning goal with one second remaining to cap a hard fought and back and forth contest and give the sixth-ranked women's lacrosse team the last second win over No. 14 New Haven, 11-10, in a non-conference clash on Hickox Field on Wednesday evening.

C.W. Post improves to 5-1 on the season while New Haven evens up at 5-5 overall.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of play, as Mayott scored at 27:23, followed by a tally from senior attacker Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) on a Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) at 26:51, and an unassisted score from Brie-Claire Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) at 20:46.

The Chargers struck for a goal as Sarah Magnone scored at 19:43, but freshman attacker Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.) took a pass from Sileo and converted for a goal at 16:54, giving the Pioneers a 4-1 edge.

New Haven answered with back to back goals by Alexis Gabbe at 12:27 and 11:08, cutting the lead to one goal, 4-3. Junior Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) answered with a unassisted score with 4:44 to play, then Marissa Fisher scored for New Haven to keep the game close.

Mayott scored her second goal of the day with 1:41 remaining and gave CWP a 6-4 edge, but another Gabbe goal cut the lead to 6-5 heading into halftime.

New Haven scored three straight to open the second half and put the Chargers on top, as Ashely Ferrandiz, Magnone and Gabbe tallied scores for UNH.

But Mayott scored an unassisted goal at 19:47, and sophomore Morgan Chiarenza (Nesconset, N.Y.) scored on a free position shot at 18:46, knotting the score at 8-8.

Gabbe gave UNH the lead again with 15:30 to play, scoring to make the score9-8. But Chiarenza and Sileo connected at 12:29 and tied the game again, 9-9. CWP took its first lead since early in the second half on an Abigail Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) goal and a Mayott assist at 11:19, only to see Gabbe score her sixth goal of the day and tie the game at 10:10.

New Haven gained possession of the ball around the four minute mark, and retained possession as time ran down, with sophomore goalkeeper Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) coming up with several key saves in the waning moments. With only 30 seconds remaining, the Pioneers forced a turnover in their own defensive end, and the loose ball was picked up by Ross, who battled a New Haven defender but finally gained possession. She sent a pass upfield to Mayott, who received the pass just over the midfield mark, fought her way into the 8-meter, and sent a shot into the upper left corner past UNH goalkeeper Maureen Connolloy as time expired.

In a game where every possession was a battle, the Pioneers held a 13-9 edge in draw control, while New Haven picked up 21 ground balls to C.W. Post's 18. The Pioneers held a slim 28-24 edge in shots, and converted 9-of-10 clear attempts.

Mayott ended her day with four goals and an assist, while Chiarenza scored two and Sileo registered three assists. Mosca made 11 stops on the day as she improved to 5-1 on the season. Defensively, Chelsea Donaldson (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had a strong game, picking up four ground balls and causing two turnovers while winning one draw control.

The Pioneers travel to Seton Hill on April 9 and Lake Erie on April 10, taking on the two teams in a weekend roadtrip that features two ECC matchups.
