Lock Haven Tops West Chester for PSAC Crown

from press release

– The No. 4 Lock Haven University lacrosse team (16-2) capped off the three-peat today as the Lady Eagles downed host and rival West Chester University (15-4) 10-9 in another thrilling PSAC Championship game between the two conference powers.

The win marked the third straight for The Haven over West Chester in the title game.

Today's championship marks the sixth in Lock Haven history (2011, 2010, 2009, 1981, 1980 & 1979).

Today also marked the sixth consecutive PSAC title game between LHU and WCU and the two powers have held a recent lockdown on the conference.

Senior Allison Berger (Oreland, Pa./Springfield) was named the tournament's MVP after recording 13 points in two games.

She had two goals and two assists in today's championship game to go along with nine points yesterday. Yesterday, she had six goals and three assists in the win over East Stroudsburg.

West Chester took an early 2-0 lead, but Lock Haven responded with six goals to close out the first half to lead 6-2 at the break.

Jessica Pandolf (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) scored just over 10 minutes into the second half to make it 7-2.

LHU continued to pressure and stretched its second-half lead to 10-5 with under eight minutes to play.

West Chester, winners of 20 previous conference titles, would not go away without a fight on its home turf and the Golden Rams scored the next four goals to make it 10-9 with 3:22 left.

With the game on the line LHU goalie Heather Sacko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) proved why she is one of the premier goalies in the nation and made two incredible point-blank stops with just seconds left in the title match.

Sacko's late-game heroics led a Haven defensive unit that had been tough all day.

Sacko finished with eight saves, which helped Lock Haven in the nail-biter.

Katie Zichelli (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) was the leader on defense and caused three turnovers to go along with three ground balls.

Pandolf and Gwen Buss (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) both recorded hat tricks for Lock Haven.

Pandolf also had four draw controls which were clutch for the Lady Eagles.

Chelsea Borrino (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and Elyse Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) both scored once for LHU.

Kate Smyth (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) recorded two assists for The Haven.

Tori Dugan led West Chester with three goals.

Yesterday, Lock Haven cruised past ESU 15-7 in semifinal action. West Chester knocked off No. 12 Mercyhurst 10-7 in the day's other semifinal.

Lock Haven and West Chester will now wait see if they are selected to the NCAA Division II Championship. The NCAA selections will be made Sunday, May 8 at 9 p.m.

Lock Haven and Wes Chester were ranked No. 2 and 3 respectively in the last week's South Region Poll. Limestone held the top spot.
