Dowling Edges C.W. Post in OT

from press release

- Kelly Cefalu scored the game winner :41 seconds into the third overtime to give #5 Dowling a 15-14 victory over #8 CW Post. With the win, Dowling improves to 14-2, 7-0 ECC while CW Post drops to 13-4, 7-1 in conference. The win also secures the Golden Lions a share of the ECC Regular Season title, the first in the history of the program.

Holding an early 2-1 lead, Dowling would find itself playing from behind for the majority of the afternoon. The biggest deficit came at the 22:46 mark of the second half as a CW Post tally from Abigail Ross gave the Pioneers a three goal lead. Nicolle Moran would prove to be her best when Dowling faced the most pressure. The sophomore scored to cut the three goal Pioneer lead to one on a free position shot, to tie the game at 13 on a feed from Cassandra Cronin, and added the game tying goal with :34 left in the second overtime to force a third OT.

At the start of the third OT, senior Samantha Titus won a huge draw and the Dowling offense would take over. Moran found a cutting Kelly Cefalu in front of the net. In a flare for the dramatic, Cefalu would lose possession, regain control, spin to her left and fire a shot past CW Post goalkeeper Dominique Mosca for the game winner.

Senior goalkeeper Rachael Goldstein was once again terrific between the pipes. She finished with 11 saves, none bigger than the point blank save at the end of regulation to force OT. Moran finished with a career high seven goals and forced three turnovers, including one at the end of the second OT that would lead to her game tying goal. Cronin had three goals and two assists and Titus had a goal, three ground balls and five draw controls from the back line.

For CW Post, Lauren Spagnoletta was excellent scoring four goals and adding two assists and freshman Jackie Sielo continued her superb rookie year with two goals and three helpers. Mosca finished with 15 saves.

This is the first victory for Dowling over CW Post in their four year history, their fifth straight road win and 11th straight overall. The Golden Lions can lock up the ECC title tomorrow as they return home for their season finale against Seton Hill. First draw is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
