Lenoir-Rhyne Trips Up No. 12 Florida Southern

- Florida Southern was unable to overcome an early deficit as they fell to Lenoir-Rhyne 20-16 Saturday afternoon at Bryant Stadium. With the win the Bears improve to 9-3, while the Moccasins fall to 7-2.

Lenoir-Rhyne took the first five shots of the game and converted four of them into goals to give the Bears a 4-0 lead. The Moccasins responded as Katie Ferree converted a free position shot to cut the deficit to 4-1 with 21:51 remaining in the first half. After a Bears' goal, Danielle LaDuca scored a man-down goal to cut the deficit to 5-2. Lenoir-Rhyne scored four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 9-2. The two teams traded goals twice, before Mara Mason found LaDuca cutting towards the cage for a goal to cut the deficit to 11-5 at half.

The Mocs struck first in the second half, as Caitlin Chase connected with Mason for a goal. After back-to-back goals by the Bears, Mason scored a free position goal to cut the lead to 13-7. The two teams traded goals, before Maureen Cromer scored an unassisted goal. Less than a minute later Mary Minick shot got past the goalie for a Bears goal.

Chase connected with Megan Asper and Ferree for back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 15-11. Lenoir-Rhyne scored four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 19-11 with 12:22 left in the second half. Katie Gladhill picked up a ground ball off a Bears turnover and found Cromer down the field for a goal. After a Lenoir-Rhyne goal, the Mocs scored the final four goals of the contest for the 20-16 final.

Florida Southern had nine players score at least one point led by Chase who tallied four goals and three assists. Cromer and LaDuca finished with three goals each.

Asper led the Moccasins with five caused turnovers, while LaDuca picked up five draw controls. Melissa Halstead picked up six ground balls and caused three turnovers. Lindsay Holdway made six saves in 29 minutes of action.

The Moccasins return to action next Saturday when they travel to North Carolina to face Pfieffer. Game time is 1 p.m.
