No. 15 Florida Southern Downs Queens (N.C.)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte played host to No. 15 Florida Southern University this evening at Dickson Field, falling 17-10 to the Mocs. The Royals drop to 2-3 on the year, while the Mocs improved to 2-1.

Following a 2-1 lead for the Mocs early in the game, the Royals went on a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 lead midway through the half. However, Florida Southern would find some momentum in the final eight minutes, outscoring the Royals 4-1. Queens would hold a one point lead, 8-7, at the break.

Florida Southern would start the second much like they finished the first, scoring three in a row to take a 10-8 lead with 22:56 to play. Back-to-back free-position-shots from Queens' Brittany Larranaga (Orlando, Fla., Bishop Moore Catholic) and Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) would equalize things back up at 10-10 before the 15 minute mark.

The Mocs would then go on to net seven straight for the win.

The Royals were outshot 29-22, but won 16 draw controls to Florida Southern's 13.

Maggie Masters (Annapolis, Md., Annapolis) led Queens with three goals, while Barnwell also notched three points with two goals and one assist. Barnwell also collected eight draw controls to lead Queens. Akasha Kasper (Greensboro, N.C., Western Guilford) led in ground balls with three. Arika Zimmerman (Fulton, Md., Reservoir) tallied two goals, and Nicole Forgione (Davidson, N.C., Northern Guilford) totaled one goal and one assist. Danielle Horoschak (Jarrettsville, Md., North Harford) took the loss in the net after getting seven stops.

Danielle LaDuca and Caitlin Chase each totaled five points for the Mocs, while Megan Asper, Lorianne Hoover and Mara Mason each collected four points. Hoover also recorded seven draw controls and four ground balls to lead Florida Southern. Katie Hammerer was awarded the win in the net after getting three saves in just the second half.

The Royals return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mount Olive College.
