Nies and No. 7 Dolphins Swim Past No. 9 Stonehill

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Victoria Nies (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt)scored a career-best five goals to lead the seventh-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team to an 18-9 win over ninth-ranked Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.

The Dolphins opened the game's scoring just 65 seconds into the contest as Nies tallied an unassisted goal after dodging down the left alley.

The Skyhawks responded with two goals in a span of 59 seconds to take the lead. Kayla Green converted a free-position shot with 27:45 left in the half and then fed Heather Sullivan on the right edge of the crease for her 30th goal of the year.

After almost nine minutes of scoreless action, Le Moyne posted back-to-back goals 16 seconds apart. Junior attacker Kathleen Conese (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) netted the first goal at the 18:01 mark after a Stonehill foul near midfield, while freshmanKaitlyn Armstrong (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) gave the Dolphins a 3-2 lead off a pass from senior midfielder Jennifer Fabian (Clay, N.Y./C.W. Baker).

Stonehill (7-4, 6-2 NE-10) answered with two goals in 11 seconds to regain the lead. Kelsey Reilly finished off a feed from Mary Lee Mahony with 16:58 left in the half and then Sullivan scored after taking a pass from Kelsey Shannahan.

Freshman attacker Claire Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) converted a free-position shot with 15:41 left to knot the score at four apiece, but Green answered 34 seconds later off a pass from Mahony to give the lead back to the Skyhawks.

Le Moyne countered with three goals over a span of 2:04 to take the lead for good. Conese started the run with a free-position goal with 14:05 left, Nies followed with her second goal of the game off a feed from senior attacker Brenna Bauer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) at the 12:40 mark and then Bauer scored 39 seconds later after taking a pass from Conese.

Sullivan snapped Le Moyne's run with an unassisted goal with 9:47 left, but that would be Stonehill's final goal of the half.

The Dolphins pulled away from Stonehill with five goals over the final 9:14 of the first half. Fabian ignited the streak with a free-position goal at the 9:14 mark for an 8-6 lead. Senior midfielder Gabrielle Kamide (Deferiet, N.Y./Carthage) then recorded assists on Le Moyne's next two goals. Bauer found the back of the net with 7:37 left, while Armstrong netted her fifth goal of the season with 3:58 remaining from in front of the cage. Conese completed her first-half hat trick with an unassisted goal with 1:42 left, while Nies picked up her third goal with just five seconds left in the half.

Le Moyne started the scoring in the second half as senior attacker Kelly Condon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) scored from the front edge of the crease off a pass from freshman attacker Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) just 55 seconds into the half. Nies pushed Le Moyne's lead to 14-6 with a free-position goal at the 25:28 mark.

Shannahan ended Stonehill's scoring drought of 21:07 by netting her 20th goal of the year with 18:40 remaining off a pass from Sullivan.

Armstrong extended Le Moyne's lead back to eight 45 seconds later after weaving through the Stonehill defense on the right side.

Shannahan converted a free-position shot with 13:34 remaining and Sullivan scored off a feed from Reilly to get the Skyhawks within 15-9 with 8:42 left, but those would be Stonehill's final goals of the game.

Off the draw following Sullivan's goal, Conese carried the ball down the right side before sending a pass in front of the goal to a cutting Laura Hoffman(Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua), who fired her third goal of the season into the left side of the net. Kamide got in the scoring column with her ninth goal of the year with 1:54 left off a pass from Claire Monnat, while Nies finished off the game's scoring with a free-position goal with 1:04 remaining.

Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Marbut (Edgewater, Md./South River) registered 11 saves to earn the victory between the pipes. Ashley Armstrong made four saves (against 14 goals) in 41:20 to take the loss, while Caitlyn Taveira had two saves (against four goals) in 18:40.

Le Moyne (6-2, 4-1 NE-10), which improved to 4-0 against the Skyhawks, returns to action on Tuesday at Assumption College at 4:00 p.m.
