Adelphi Bounces Stonehill in NE-10 Semifinal

from press release

SYRAUCE, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the second seeded women's lacrosse team took on the third seeded Skyhawks of Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 semifinals. The Panthers got on the board first and never looked back as they notched a total of 11 goals over two halves while holding the challengers to just seven over the 60 minute contest. With the win, Adelphi moves to 17-1 and advances to their fourth straight NE-10 Championship game and will attempt to defend their title after winning it the last three years in a row.

Sara Sangiorgio and Rachel O'Brien provided most of the offensive firepower for Adelphi as they duo combined for seven goals. Felicia Mills, Danielle Jaycox and Emily Keesling all found the back of the net once while Devan Crimi dished out five assists and scored one goal of her own.

Defensively, Lauren Janelli picked up a team high four ground balls while Mills took seven draw controls. Jordann Dempsey logged all 60 minutes and registered the win after making seven saves.

For Stonehill, Kayla Green and Kelsey Shannahan each registered two goals apiece while Emily Faherty, Heather Sullivan and Kelsey Reilly rounded out the scoring contingent with one goal each. Ashley Armstrong was the losing goalkeeper despite making eight saves.

O'Brien and Sangiorgio wasted no time putting their team up 2-0 in the early stages of the game. Shannahan and Reilly bookmarked Sangiorgio's second goal, but the Panthers went on to rip off another three straight goals before Shannahan stopped the bleeding and cut the lead in half, making it a 6-3 affair by the break.

Within three minutes of each other, O'Brien and Crimi furthered the Panther lead on successful unassisted attempts to make it an 8-3 contest with just under 26 minutes left to play. Kayle Green responded with two of her own but Sangiorgio and Mills beat Stonehill keeper Armstrong on back-to-back scoring opportunities.

With 3:03 remaining, Stonehill managed to get one back to make it a four-goal game, but O'Brien put in her 51st of the season and third of the game before Sullivan registered the game's final goal with six seconds left as the scoreboard showed 11-7 in favor of the Brown and Gold.

Adelphi heads back to the Northeast-10 Championship game for the fourth consecutive time and will face top seeded Le Moyne College at Le Moyne. Tomorrow's championship is slated for a 1pm start.
