LIU Post Dispatches Stonehill, Adelphi Next

from press release

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The top-ranked LIU Post women's lacrosse team dispatched No. 9 Stonehill College with an efficient 15-9 victory in NCAA First Round action on Saturday morning.

The Pioneers, who improve to 18-0 on the season, punch their ticket next week's NCAA semifinal contest, where they will meet familiar foe Adelphi University at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills, Maryland.

The Skyhwaks conclude their season with a 13-7 mark.

LIU Post outscored Stonehill 10-5 in the first half, but did not get off to their usual quick start as the Skyhawks maintained possession for much of the early going and led 3-2 after Kayla Green's goal at 22:88.

Another four minutes came off the clock before the Pioneers tied the game on Ashley Olen's (East Islip, N.Y.) goal off a Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) feed. That goal was the catalyst, as it began a seven-goal spurt for the Pioneers that saw Sileo score twice, Olen score three more times, and Abbie Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) add on marker.

After Olen's fourth score of the game at 7:59, the Pioneers held a 9-3 lead. Stonehill's Kelsey Reilly and Heather Sullivan scored at 4:42 and 3:20 to cut the Pioneer lead to just four, but the Sileo threaded a pass to Katie Rotan (West Islip, N.Y.) with 37 seconds remaining in the half to make it a 10-5 game at halftime.

The second half was much more tightly contested, but the Pioneers played well enough to keep the Skyhawks at arm's length, despite outscoring them by only 5-4 in the second stanza.

Elizabeth Lane's tally at 22:38 opened the scoring and cut the Pioneer lead to four again, but Sileo scored back-to-back at 22:54 and 21:51, and following a Sullivan score for Stonehill, Sileo found the back of the net again at 12:10 for a 13-7 advantage. Both teams would score another two apiece but the Pioneers came away with the win after a solid effort both offensively and defensively.

Sileo tied her career high and continued her post-season excellence with a 12-point outing, scoring six and dishing six assists. Olen scored four goals and Ross factored in with a hat trick, while Rotan scored on goal with three assist. Junior Morgan Chiarenza (Nesconset, N.Y.) scored a goal and added an assist. In goal, senior Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) made six saves in the victory.

Kelsey Reilly scored four to lead the Skyhawks. Sullivan added a hat trick, while Ashley Armstrong made four saves in the loss.
