LIU-Post's Sileo Setting a High Bar for DII to Follow

BALTIMORE - For even the best players in the game, breaking career scoring records is usually done down the stretch of one's senior year, finally catching up to a great who preceded you before time runs out and your name is left on top of the list for someone else to catch in the future.

That's not the case for Jackie Sileo, Lacrosse Magazine's Preseason Player of the Year for NCAA Women's Division II. A monster junior year saw the Wantagh, N.Y., native rewrite the record book with 178 points and 117 assists, both LIU Post single-season records. On the way, she set the NCAA career scoring record for Division II and the all-division mark for assists, while helping the Pioneers capture a second straight NCAA title.

"She's such a selfless player," LIU Post head coach Meghan McNamara told LM's Mark Macyk for a profile of Sileo in our upcoming February issue. "I'm even more proud because of her character. For her, it was always just how the team embodied each other. She'll probably reflect more on it all when she's out of college. Then she'll understand what incredible accomplishments she's had."

Sileo enters her senior season with 420 career points, just 25 behind DI record holder and US Lacrosse National Hall of Famer Jen Adams' 445 and 80 away from Ashley Hansbury's DIII record of 500. But despite the gaudy numbers she has put up, for Sileo, it's still about the team.

"I've never really pictured [the career records as a big deal]," she told Macyk. "I wanted a national championship. Then I focused on doing it twice. Now I don't have to be upset and have all the what-ifs running through my head."
