Early Surge Sparks F&M Over W&L

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 3 Franklin & Marshall Diplomats started the contest on a 5-0 run and never looked back as it claimed an 11-8 victory over the No. 14 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

F&M (1-0) tallied the first five goals of the contest over a 10-minute span, assuming the 5-0 lead with 20:10 in the opening half. During the run, junior midfielder Katie Delaney (Silver Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) scored two goals, while junior midfielder Lauren Ehrhardt (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) notched one goal and one assist.

The Generals (3-1) responded, recording four unanswered goals during the final 20 minutes of the first half to pull within one goal (5-4) at the break. Senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) had two goals during the run, while senior attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) and first-year Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) added a goal apiece.

The Diplomats started the second half much like the first, finding the net three times in the opening 3:08 to assume an 8-4 lead with 26:52 remaining in the contest. W&L rallied to pull within one goal (9-8) with 15:40 on the clock, receiving goals from first-year attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks), junior attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), Mathews and sophomore midfielder Ashley Barnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's). However, F&M scored the final two goals of the game to earn its first victory of the season.

For the contest, W&L held a 22-19 advantage in shots and a 13-8 edge in draw controls, but F&M grabbed a 16-7 lead in ground balls.

Mathews paced the Generals with three goals, while Megargel and McKaig each added a goal and an assist.

F&M junior attacker Erin Dunne (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) scored all three of her goals in the second half and added an assist to finish the day with four points. Ehrhardt chipped in two goals and an assist, while Delaney added two goals.

Senior keeper Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played all 60:00 in net, recording four saves. F&M keepers Kelsey Hoffman (Arlington, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and Rebecca Rosen (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) shared time in net, with Hoffman earning the win. Hoffman played 40:06 in net with three saves and six goals against, while Rosen recorded 19:54 with two saves and two goals against.

W&L returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Hollins for a 4:45 pm contest.
