No. 5 Gettysburg Turns Away Etown

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Goalies Maddie Coleman (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and Laura McIntyre (Glenmoore, Pa./Coatesville) combined for a dozen saves to lead fifth-ranked Gettysburg College past Elizabethtown College 11-6 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.

Gettysburg (2-0) tallied the final three goals to push past Elizabethtown (0-2). Junior Hannah Church (Ellicott City, Md./Daniel Hand) and freshman Loren Pruitt (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) each turned in three goals for the victors, while senior All-American Becky Lutz (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) tied a personal mark with six caused turnovers.

Sarah Cullinan put Elizabethtown on the board first in Saturday's affair, but Gettysburg tallied each of the next three goals as a Lindsey Robinson (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) score at 16:09 gave the hosts a 3-1 cushion.

The two teams exchanged the next four goals to maintain the two-goal differential heading into the half.

With Coleman stepping up with a career-high six stops in the opening period, McIntyre put the clamp down in the second, making six saves of her own as the defense kept the Blue Jays off the board for nearly the first 17 minutes of the final stanza. Meanwhile, back-to-back goals by freshman Bailey Beardsley (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) set the score at 7-3 at 13:50.

Elizabethtown jumped back into the contest with three of the next four goals. Emily Butler accounted for two tallies, the last following on a nice feed by Becky Porter pulling the visitors to 8-6 with 8:08 left to play.

The Bullets grabbed momentum with a pair of goals just eight seconds apart, both by Pruitt. After Pruitt netted a goal at 5:55, Robinson won the ensuing draw control and raced down the middle of the field. She found Pruitt on the left side of the cage for a score at 5:47. Church capped the scoring with her third goal at 3:45.

Gettysburg finished with advantages in shots (27-20) and draw controls (10-9), while Elizabethtown held the lead in ground balls (24-22).

Church and Robinson each finished with five points. Church added a pair of helpers to her goal total, while Robinson tallied two goals and dished out three assists. Pruitt handed out an assist and Sawers posted one goal and one assist.

Defensively , Lutz led the way, adding four ground balls and three draw controls to her caused turnover total. Sawers added four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while freshman Kelly Spieker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) tallied four ground balls.

Cullinan and Butler each finished with a pair of goals for the visitors. Cullinan also added an assist and two caused turnovers. Rachael Waldman posted eight saves in the cage.

Gettysburg embarks on a trip to Orlando, Fla., over the College's spring break. The Bullets play Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday, March 14, at 11 a.m. before closing the trip against Hamilton College on Wednesday, March 16, at 8:30 a.m.
