Bullets Rebound, Take Down Swarthmore

from press release

– Gettysburg didn't waste any time getting back into the win column after a one-goal loss to top-ranked TCNJ on Friday, as the sixth-ranked Bullets knocked off host Swarthmore 16-7 in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (7-2, 4-0 CC) received a big contribution from sophomore Lindsey Robinson (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) who tossed in five goals and dished out two assists. Senior Marnie Commins (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson), junior Hannah Church (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales), and freshmen Katie Blumenthal (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) and Kelsey Markiewicz (Taconic, Conn./Berkshire School (Mass.)) each added two goals, while senior goalkeeper Laura McIntyre (Glenmoore, Pa./Coatesville) stopped a career-high 10 shots.

Swarthmore (6-3, 2-2 CC) was held to its lowest goal total of the season, but the Garnet touched the scoreboard first as Emily Evans found Nicole Vanchieri at 1:18 into the game.

Gettysburg was quick to answer with Blumenthal finding the net just 27 seconds later. It was the start of a three-goal run by the visitors with Church and Robinson also lighting the lamp.

After the Garnet tallied their second goal, the Bullets tossed in five-straight scores, the last two by Commins and freshman Loren Pruitt (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) coming just 30 seconds apart and giving the team an 8-2 lead with 5:20 remaining in the first half.

Swarthmore scored two of the final three goals of the opening period to pull to 9-4 at the break.

The visitors opened a double-digit lead to begin the final frame with each of the first five scores, including tallies by freshman Bailey Beardsley (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Robinson 18 seconds apart to start the run. A free-position goal by Church made it 14-4 with 15:25 to play and the Bullets emptied the bench shortly after.

Gettysburg finished with the edge in shots (35-25), ground balls (22-19), and draw controls (13-11).

Robinson finished two points shy of her season high set in the opener against the University of Mary Washington. At one point in the game, she had a hand in seven of 10 goals scored by Gettysburg. Commins added a pair of helpers, while Blumenthal dished out one assist.

McIntyre remained perfect on the season at 5-0 by topping her previous career high for saves by two in the game's first 47:46. Freshman Jenn Levy (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) made one save in the remaining time. Sophomore Lindsay Menton (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg Country School) led the defense with three caused turnovers and corralled three ground balls, while senior Becky Lutz (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) recorded a game-high five draw controls.

Marie Mutryn led Swarthmore with two goals and Corinne Sommi and Annaliese Penikis each posted one goal and one assist. Michelle Ammerman made 11 saves in the Garnet cage.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, April 6, with a road trip to McDaniel College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
