No. 12 Merrimack Tops SNHU in Shootout

from press release

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Behind eight points from Colleen Strachan (Bedford, MA) and four goals from Christina McCarron (Westwood, MA), the 12th-ranked Merrimack women's lacrosse team overcame an early 9-6 deficit to rally for the 21-14 victory over Southern New Hampshire Wednesday afternoon.

Down by three in the first half, Merrimack received five unanswered goals from Liz Lyons (Westwood, MA), Nicole Moran (Pembroke, MA), McCarron, Maria DeStefano (Eliot, ME), and Alicia Tinsley (Shrewsbury, MA) to take the 11-9 lead.

After the Penmen made it 11-10, the Warriors rattled off seven of the next eight goals, three from McCarron to take control with an 18-11 lead.

Southern New Hampshire poured it on in the second half, outshooting Merrimack 21-16, but Inna Hedden (Woodbine, MD) made 12 saves in the final 30 minutes and 17 in the win. The freshman goaltender stopped three of four second-half free-position shots.

"I was impressed with oru compsure and how we maintained control of the game," said head coach Corinne Baker. "They're a very physical team and we kept control on the field. We really broke the game open in the second half, and it had a lot to do with winning draw controls. Strachan and Huie were big on draws. It was a big win to bounce back from the tough losses last week."

Strachan led the way with five goals, eight points, seven draw controls and two caused turnovers and leads the team with 46 points in 11 games this season.

Mary Pasquantonio (Plainville, MA) matched McCarron's output with four goals, including her 30th of the year, while Olivia Huie (Norwell, MA) was excellent off draws with a game-high seven draw controls. Tinsley finished with three goals and five points, while Lyons totaled four ground balls and four caused turnovers defensively.

Merrimack (7-4, 4-3 NE-10) heads to Saint Anselm on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Hawks.
