Bullets Barrage Adrian with 25 Goals, Advance to NCAA Division III Regionals

from press release

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College dealt Adrian College a taste of its own medicine, putting up the fifth-highest goal total in NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament history in a 25-10 victory in the opening round on Wednesday, May 11, at Clark Field.

Gettysburg (15-4) advances to this weekend's regionals hosted by Salisbury University (17-2) on May 14-15. The Bullets face the winner of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands University at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday with Sunday's regional championship slated for 1 p.m.

The host Orange and Blue received big contributions from a number of sources in putting up its highest goal total since a 26-2 romp over the University of Puget Sound University in 2000. Sophomore Lindsey Robinson (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) tied Gettysburg's postseason record with eight points on five goals and three assists. Junior Hannah Church (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales) tied a personal mark with six goals and freshman Loren Pruitt (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) posted three goals and two assists.

Adrian (16-5) came into the first round of the NCAA Tournament as the nation's leading scorer at 19 goals per game and was riding a 15-game winning streak. The Bulldogs were left panting as the hosts went off for 14 goals in the opening half alone. After the visitors pulled the score to 3-2 on a goal by Olivia Duncan at 25:25, Gettysburg put up 15 of the next 16 scores leading into the second period. Robinson accounted for four goals and an assist as the lead grew to 18-3 with 23:36 to play.

Church's fifth goal at 16:23 put the score at 21-5 before Adrian netted five of the next six goals, including two by Amanda Lambert. But Gettysburg put the bow on the game's outcome with the last three goals to close with the fourth-highest scoring game in school history. Gettysburg also set team playoff records for goals and points (36).

Gettysburg's defense stepped up and held the nation's scoring leader nine goals below its season average and forced Adrian into a season-high 20 turnovers. Senior Becky Lutz (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and sophomore Alex Casey (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington) each posted three caused turnovers, the latter adding three ground balls and three draw controls.

Sophomore Mairead McGuirk (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) procured five draw controls as Gettysburg won that battle 23-14. Freshman Kelsey Markiewicz (Salisbury, Conn./Berkshire School (Mass.)) added four draw controls to go with two goals and one assist.

Senior Marnie Commins (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson), sophomore Lindsay Menton (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg Country School), and freshman Katie Blumenthal (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) each posted two goals and one assist for the hosts. Junior Maddie Coleman (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) made a pair of saves in the victory.

Lambert posted three goals and one assist to lead Adrian. Rachel Johnston and Olivia Duncan each turned in three goals and Cassie Hoyez accumulated five draw controls and two caused turnovers.
