No. 1 Gettysburg Eases Past Haverford

– Sophomore Kelsey Markiewicz (Salisbury, Conn./Berkshire School (Mass.)) scored five goals and classmate Katie Blumenthal (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) came off the bench for three more to lead the top-ranked Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team to a 17-7 victory at Haverford College in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.

Gettysburg (5-0, 1-0 CC) used four four-goal runs to jet past Haverford (1-5, 0-1 CC). The Fords were the first to bite as Megan Gallagher scored at 27:02, but the visitors hit for a pair of quick back-to-back scores. Blumenthal found the net first at 24:07 and junior Lindsay Menton (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg Country School) followed up just 47 seconds later. Menton connected on her second score off a free-position shot at 18:25, just 30 seconds after Markiewicz turned in her first tally.

Gallagher stopped the first run at 11:56 to slice the lead to 4-2, but four more goals quickly followed with Markiewicz giving the visitors an 8-2 lead at 9:26. She would add her fourth goal of the opening period with 28 second left to put the Bullets up 10-4.

Gettysburg turned in six of the first seven goals of the second half with freshman Mandy Buell's (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) first collegiate tally setting the score at 16-5 with 11:20 remaining in the game.

Gettysburg held a decisive edge in shots (32-12) and draw controls (20-6), while forcing Haverford into 17 turnovers.

Markiewicz turned in her scoring tally on just six shots and added three draw controls. Blumenthal dished out an assist for four points and Menton finished with two goals and one assist. Senior Hannah Church (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales) and junior Lindsey Robinson (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) each finished with one goal and two assists. Sophomore Bailey Beardsley (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) tallied two goals and one helper.

Senior goalie Maddie Coleman (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) logged three saves in the victory. She was helped on the defensive end by freshmen Allie Clark (Wynnewood, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and Faith Tully (Summit, N.J./Summit) who each posted two caused turnovers. Fellow first-years Gretchen Boehmcke (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lake) and Kate Higgins (Oreland, Pa./William Penn Charter School) each posted four ground balls and an assist, the latter adding a goal as well.

Gallagher, Diana Perry, and Alexa Pesce each scored a pair of goals for Haverford.

Gettysburg will make its home debut at Clark Field against Muhlenberg College next Saturday (March 24) at 1 p.m.
