William Smith, which was trying to get back to the national tournament since 2004, finishes the season with a 9-9 record.

Rensselaer opened the contest by scoring the first eight goals on just nine shots for an 8-0 lead in the first 18 minutes. Sophomore Marissa Page (Schenectady, NY / Guilderland) started the scoring just 20 seconds into the contest off an assist from classmate Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI / LaSalle Academy). Colitz scored six minutes later before Page notched her second of the game at 22:17, causing William Smith to call a timeout.

Senior Madeline Sisson (Rochester, NY / Our Lady of Mercy) made it a four-goal margin at 20:33 with a free position goal, before Colitz scored on a rebound of her own shot at the 19:08 mark. Freshmen Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT / Windsor) and Lydia Wolter (Hampton, NH / St. Thomas Aquinas) each tallied to put the Engineers ahead, 7-0, with 13:31 to go in the first half.

The Herons gained some momentum off the draw control but were denied on consecutive shots thanks to junior goalie Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY / Phillips Exeter Academy), who made back-to-back saves, including a free position shot at 12:37. Wolter then tallied her second of the game on a free position attempt.

William Smith got on the scoreboard at 8:53 when senior Lucy Johnson (Short Hills, NJ / Millburn) scored into the bottom left of the cage off a start-and-stop move from eight meters. RPI scored the next two goals to go ahead, 10-2, before Callie Frelinghuysen (Darien, CT / Darien) tallied for the visitors at the 6:10 mark. Liz Powell's (Camillus, NY / West Genesee) free position goal with 48 seconds left in the first half made it an 11-2 Rensselaer lead at the break.

Page gave RPI a 12-2 edge early in the second half before William Smith scored the next four, including the 145th in the career of Johnson and three straight markers from senior Rosie Scheibel (Auburn, NY / Auburn). RPI answered with three goals of its own, by Colitz, Sisson and junior Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ / Randolph).

Arnal finished with 13 saves to earn the Most Outstanding Player Award. Others from Rensselaer joining Arnal on the All-Tournament Team were Colitz, Page, Sisson, Maguire, Wolter and Lauren Miller (North Andover, MA / North Andover).

Rensselaer, which is coached by Leslie DeLano, a 2000 William Smith graduate who was celebrating her birthday, had a 19-15 edge in ground balls.
