Geremia, Cortland Women Roll Into SUNYAC Finals

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland freshman Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) scored a game-high six points on four goals and two assists to become the first freshman and just fourth player overall in program history to record 100 points in a season as the nationally fourth-ranked Red Dragons defeated The College at Brockport, 16-6, in the SUNYAC Semifinals Friday afternoon at the Stadium Complex.

The Red Dragons (17-1) advanced to their 15th consecutive conference title game where they will face third-seeded Geneseo, a 10-3 winner versus 16th-ranked Fredonia St. in the second semifinal, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with the winner earning an automatic NCAA Div. III playoff berth. Brockport fell to 12-6 with the loss.

Geremia, who now has 103 points on 52 goals and 51 assists and joins Danielle Torre, Lindsay Abbott and current teammate senior Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) on the milestone list, led nine Cortland goal scorers on the day. Di Fato tallied three goals, and senior Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) and junior Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) each netted a pair of goals.Junior Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt), sophomores Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) and freshman Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) recorded one goal and one assist apiece and junior Taylor Reh (Miller Place) added a goal.

Senior goalie Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) made five saves in 54 minutes, 53 seconds before giving way to freshman Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's), who stopped one shot over the final 5:07. Monaghan registered a game-high seven draw controls, Beville collected a team-high four ground balls and junior Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) caused three turnovers.

Sophomore Ciara McKeon (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) led the Golden Eagles with two goals. Senior Kaila Maguire (Potsdam), junior Alyssa Scordo (Watertown/South Jefferson) and sophomores Katie Sullivan (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and Nina Tassone (Liverpool) each tallied one goal with sophomore Liz Algie (Adams/South Jefferson) chipping in with an assist.

Sophomore goalie Remle Harr (Farmington/Fairport) registered eight saves. Sophomore Colleen Hathaway (Watertown/South Jefferson) and freshman Makensie Schuber (Webster/Webster Thomas) led Brockport with four ground balls apiece, Sullivan recorded three draws and junior Ally Maderer (Orchard Park) registered three caused turnovers.

The Red Dragons built a 4-0 lead just under 20 minutes into the game as four different players found the back of the net. After Tassone cut the lead to 4-1, Campese sandwiched a pair of goals around a Di Fato score and Cortland led 7-1 at the 4:36 mark. Maguire tallied an unassisted goal at 1:56 before Geremia closed the half with her first of the game nine seconds before the half and the Red Dragons led 8-2 at the break.

Cortland took control of the game by scoring the first three goals of the second half. Di Fato, Monaghan and Geremia scored in less than a two-minute span for an 11-2 lead. Scordo and McKeon pulled the Golden Eagles to within 11-4 before Geremia hit the 100-point mark with an assist of Hayes-Hurley's goal at 17:59. After Robinson and McKeon traded goals to make it a 13-5 game, Cortland netted three of the last four goals, two from Geremia, for the 16-6 final.

The Red Dragons, who have won 14 consecutive games, defeated the Knights at home, 14-10, during the regular season on March 30. Geneseo is making its first appearance in the conference title game since the 2006 season.
