BALTIMORE — Coming off its third NJCAA national championship in program history, the Monroe Community College women's lacrosse team begins the season No. 1 in Lacrosse Magazine's NJCAA preseason rankings. Additionally, Monroe sophomore attacker Melanie Murphy has been named LM's NJCAA preseason player of the year.

The Tribunes finished 2013 with an unblemished 18-0 record, beating Anne Arundel CC 17-5 in the national title game. It was Monroe's third junior college championship in four seasons, having also won in 2010 and 2011.

Murphy was named the 2013 national post-season tournament's most outstanding offensive player, tallying eight goals and five assists in the semifinals and championship game.

Murphy finished the season third best nationally with 78 points and led the NJCAA with 37 assists. Monroe also returns first-team All-American midfielder Molly Gray, who finished fourth nationally in assists (26) to go with 27 goals. Gray also won 40 draws and had 40 ground balls.

Returning national runner-up and defending District B champion Anne Arundel CC is ranked second, and led by attacker Shannon O'Neal. Her 64 points (50 goals, 14 assists) was sixth best in the junior college ranks and she scored two of Anne Arundel's five goals in the title game loss to Monroe.

Onondaga CC, another national semifinalist and last year's District A runner-up, comes in third, followed by national semifinalist Harford CC, and CCBC Essex.

The rankings were compiled by Lacrosse Magazine staff after consultation with college coaches.

Lacrosse Magazine will continue its 2014 college lacrosse preview throughout January and into February, with team-by-team breakdowns of the top teams in NCAA Division I, II and III, NJCAA and club men's and women's lacrosse.
