Big Shots: Terrence O'Donnell, Lindenhurst (N.Y.)

by Jeff Seidel | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online

WHO HE IS: Terrance O'Donnell plays midfield and attack for Lindenhurst (N.Y.) He's a senior, and this is the second year on the varsity. O'Donnell has improved a lot this season and is a force on offense with 39 points after recovering from a broken femur. The Bulldogs graduated several seniors last year, paving the way for playing time for the previously-restricted O'Donnell. He is headed to Nassau Community College next year and could play for the defending NJCAA champion.

WHAT HE DID: O'Donnell scored three goals and added one assist in an 8-5 victory over Ward Melville, the Bulldogs' first game of their league season. O'Donnell scored a pair of early goals that helped Lindenhurst jump on top. The Bulldogs have slipped since then, and are 1-5 in Division 1 and 2-6 overall. But the win was a big one -- Melville was the defending division champion. O'Donnell also got three goals and two assists in a loss last week.

WHY WE NOTICED: O'Donnell's big outburst helped Lindenhurst end a long stretch of frustration against Ward Melville. It's the first time the Bulldogs have beaten their rivals since 1981, so this victory meant a lot to the school. Lindenhurst led most of the game against Ward Melville.

WHAT HE SAID: "It was a big game at the start of the [division] season. It was our first league game, and we came out strong that day. We were ready to go. Nobody said a word on the bus on the way there. We were ready to play the game. It's one of our bigger rivals, definitely. We had a pretty fun bus ride home. We played great defense. Our goalie really stepped up. Our goalie, Chris Insigne, was really big for us. Our offense was clicking the whole time, and our defense was playing well. We had good communication the whole time."

WHAT'S NEXT: Lindenhurst plays Sachem East and Walt Whitman this week as it tries to continue to keep its playoff hopes alive.
