Big Shots: Katie Schwarzmann, Century (Md.)

by Jeff Seidel | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online
Maryland-bound Katie Schwarzmann of Century (Md.) became Carroll County's all-time leading scorer last week when she notched her 260th career goal in a big win Thursday over Smithsburg.

WHO SHE IS: Katie Schwarzmann is a senior at Century High School in Carroll County (Md.). The senior midfielder already has committed to play at Maryland next year, but she's trying to help the powerful Century team get back to a high level this year. The Knights didn't make the state title game last year, the first time the school hadn't made it since opening in 2003. Schwarzmann is the team's top scorer -- and the county's -- with 60 goal this season. Her older sister, Lauren, was also a star in Carroll County, played at Johns Hopkins and now is an assistant at Cincinnati.

WHAT SHE DID: Schwarzmann has been on a tear of late. She had seven goals and an assist in a 16-6 rout of Roland Park. The senior followed that with eight goals and two assists in a 23-5 win over neighbor South Carroll, 10 goals and four assists in a 28-3 rout of Francis Scott Key and seven goals in a 21-4 win over Smithsburg.
WHY WE NOTICED: Schwarzmann has kept the statisticians busy, and with seven goals last Thursday in a 21-4 rout of Smithsburg, she became Carroll County's all-time leading scorer. She now has 261 goals, breaking the old mark (259) that Jenny Steadman set. Steadman played with Schwarzmann at Century
WHAT SHE SAID: "I've been trying to switch up some things and try out some new things, and a couple of these games have been an opportunity to try out different shots. My teammates have been looking for me on different cuts and things. We've been working on our plays, and everyone on the offense understands what to do. We've been working out the kinks, and we're really trying to get ready for the playoffs. I think this week I'm going to try and work a little harder. I'm really trying to practice different things."
WHAT'S NEXT: The Knights have two tough games this week, meeting Liberty and Westminster.
