The world lacrosse stage is headed back to England.

The 2018 Men's World Championship has been awarded to England, according to Stan Cockerton, president of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL).

The games, held every four years and up next in Denver in 2014, will be held in Manchester in July 2018. The city also hosted the men's championship in 2010. The 2018 games will use the same facilities at the Armitage Centre and the University of Manchester that were used in 2010.

"We are extremely confident that English Lacrosse, having successfully hosted the 2010 championship, will again run an event that FIL and the International lacrosse community will be proud of," Cockerton said.

England has previously hosted the men's games in 1978 and 1994 as well as 2010. England has hosted the Women's World Cup in 1982 and 2001 and will be doing so again in 2017.

"Following on from the success of the 2010 championship we are certain that this will give a fantastic boost not only to English Lacrosse but more importantly to the international game," said English Lacrosse co-president David Marsden.

An issue that will need to be addressed is that of the Iroquois Nationals, who were absent from the 2010 games due to a well-publicized dispute over the validity of their Haudenosaunee-issued passports. Germany took the Iroquois' place in the Blue Division, traditionally reserved for the top six teams from the previous world championship.

"Politics between the U.S. and the U.K. stood in the way of the Iroquois Nationals competing... in 2010," Iroquois Nationals general manager Gewas Schindler wrote in a May 10 letter to the FIL General Assembly.

Team USA defeated Canada 12-10 for the gold medal in 2010 before 4,651 fans at the University of Manchester.

Since the first men's championship in 1967, Australia and Canada have hosted three times and England and the U.S. have hosted twice. The 2014 games are hosted by US Lacrosse July 10-19 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Denver.

The Denver event is the first time that an FIL World Championship has been held in the United States away from the East Coast, and is also the first time the men's world championship has been held in the U.S. since 1998.
