MLL: Hunt, Schwartzman, Poillon Earn Weekly Awards

from press release

BOSTON -- Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending August 1, 2009, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Washington Bayhawks' midfielder Ben Hunt earned himself his first Offensive Player of the Week honor in an overtime victory against Chicago. Denver Outlaws' goalie Jesse Schwartzman took home his third Defensive Player of the Week award of the season, and in his MLL debut with Washington, Bayhawks' rookie Peet Poillon was named as this Cascade Rookie of the Week.

This marks the first time this season that two rookies, Hunt and Poillon, have earned weekly honors.

Washington hosted the Machine this past weekend in hopes of keeping their playoff hopes alive. With midfielder Kyle Dixon serving a suspension, the Bayhawks were expecting attackman Kevin Huntley to have a big night. Instead, rookie Ben Hunt scored a career-high 5 goals en route to an overtime victory, and subsequently a chance to make the playoffs. Hunt scored in every quarter.  Hunt led all Bayhawks players in points and goals for the evening.

Denver goalie Jesse Schwartzman took home another weekly honor after a 16-save performance over the Long Island Lizards. In the Outlaws' sweep of the Lizards, Schwartzman has held the opposing offense to under 10 goals in each of their three contests.  The All-Star goalie kept the Lizards in check all season by allowing only 25 goals through their three meetings.  Schwartzman currently ranks as the top goalie in the league, leading in goals against average (10.88), saves (148), and wins (9).

Washington relied heavily on its rookies to beat the Machine this past weekend, and, in his first game in the MLL, midfielder Peet Poillon did not disappoint. The rookie struck the back of the net 4 times. Poillon scored the very first goal of the game and completed a hat trick before halftime, with his first career power play goal which came late in the second quarter. With seven seconds left in the third quarter, Poillon collected his 4th and final goal of the evening.

Entering the final week of the regular season, Hunt, Poillon, and the rest of the Bayhawks team travel to Boston in hopes of a win. Face-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET.  If the Bayhawks can defeat the Cannons at home, and if the Long Island Lizards lose to Chicago on Saturday, Washington will earn an appearance at the 2009 New Balance Championship Weekend.
Schwartzman and the Outlaws will travel to Toronto for their final game of the season, and could potentially end their season with an impressive 10-2 record. Face-off at BMO Field is scheduled for 7 PM ET. The game will be shown on Tuesday, August 10 at 1 PM ET on ESPN 2.
