'Monster' Goettelmann Is MLL Sportsman of Year

from press release

Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Wednesday that attackman Tim Goettelmann of the Long Island Lizards has been honored as the 2009 New Balance Sportsman of the Year, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Players are nominated for this honor by the coaches and general managers of the six MLL teams and the finalists are presented to New Balance for consideration.
The New Balance Sportsman of the Year was created in 2004 and recognizes a player who has consistently demonstrated sportsmanship through tenacity, determination, and fair play on the field over the course of the regular season. In addition, The Sportsman of the Year should also be an individual involved in off-field charity work, which not only promotes the sport of lacrosse, but also helps youth players understand the importance of sportsmanship and team play.
"Lacrosse has been there for me," says Goettelmann, "I'm very lucky for what I have now and what's been given to me. So I want to give it back."

During this past season, Goettelmann created the charity, Monster's Kids, named after his on field nickname "the Monster", given to him for his 6'4" frame and hard lined play on the field. Goettelmann was inspired after reading the classic children's book, Where the Wild Things Are, to his young children.

Monster's Kids donates money to local children's hospitals; the first of hopefully many recipients is Schneider's Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park, NY. In addition, Tim has volunteered his time at Schneider's Children Hospital to visit with some of the children. As part of the program, the Lizards have also hosted children at games this season as honorary guests of Goettelmann.
To get the charity started, Goettelmann donated his checks from his final two Long Island games. The Lizards also generously offered to donate $100 for every goal scored during those past two games and to match Goettelmann's donation.
By visiting the hospital and interaction with these young patients, Goettelmann's goal is to help raise the spirits of these children by taking their minds off of the problems that surround them, even if it is only for just a few hours.
On the field, Goettelmann is a nine year veteran of Major League Lacrosse, joining the League back in 2001. He has played for the Lizards in every one of those nine seasons. Goettelmann also leads all MLL players in total regular season games played with 110. He became the first player in League history to break the 100 regular season game mark on May 21st when Long Island hosted the Washington Bayhawks. He has also appeared in 8 postseason games for the Lizards.
Goettelmann notched 24 goals and added 3 assists this season. He is fourth on the all-time regular season goals scored list with 230.
