Lizards Spoil Rattlers' Return to Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Attackman Matt Danowski scored three goals, including two in the first quarter, as the Long Island Lizards (1-1) jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead and never looked back en route to their first win of the season, a 13-9 victory over the Rochester Rattlers (0-2) in the Rattlers' home opener at Sahlen's Stadium on Saturday night.
Led by two goals from Danowski, the Lizards scored six straight points in the first quarter. Midfielder Stephen Berger added a goal with an assist while midfielder Chris Fiore had a two-point goal.
Just 53 seconds into the second quarter, attackman Ned Crotty ended the Lizards' run by scoring off a feed from Greg Niewieroski, which started a three-goal run by the Rattlers to close the gap to 6-3 with 7:58 left in the second quarter.
But, midfielder Chris Unterstein gave Long Island a 7-3 lead at the intermission by scoring off a feed from Fiore with 3:16 left in the period.
After the teams traded goals twice to start the second half, the Lizards used goals from attackman Tim Goettelmann and midfielder Greg Gurenlian in a nine-second span to expand their advantage to 11-5 at the end of the third quarter.
The Rattlers narrowed the margin to 11-7 in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter on goals from attackmen Martin Cahill and Brett Garber. But, Unterstein and attackman Keith Cromwell sealed the victory by scoring back-to-back goals for a 13-7 advantage with 3:48 left.
Rochester trimmed the margin to 13-9 on goals by Crotty and Niewieroski, but the Rattlers did not get any closer.
Danowski was named as the Bud Light MVP after posting a season-high five points while Berger contributed two goals with an assist. Goalkeeper Drew Adams made 12 saves in the victory for Long Island, which outshot Rochester by a 45-35 margin.
Cahill scored four goals in a losing effort for the Rattlers while Crotty contributed two goals with an assist. Goalkeeper Mike Gabel made 18 saves in a losing effort.
